Preview: Call of Duty: World at War

It stands to reason that any developer chosen to follow the massive success of Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 might be a little nervous. Call of Duty 4's emphasis on modern warfare was a refreshing break from the series' World War II stomping ground, and its phenomenal critical and consumer reception seemed to almost guarantee that modern day battlefields would comprise the backdrop of the inevitable Call of Duty 5, 6, and several other future entries.

Not so with Call of Duty: World of War. Developer Treyarch is not at all nervous to follow in Infinity Ward's large footsteps -- after all, they've done it before, and the decision to take the series back to its WWII roots doesn't require nervousness so much as it requires guts, determination, and the hope that players who are apprehensive about leaving Call of Duty 4's phenomenal playground will give Call of Duty: World at War's jungle gym a chance.

Call of Duty website updated, VIP status detailed

Gamers clamoring for more Call of Duty: World at War information should click over to CallOfDuty.com, which has been overhauled with information regarding the series' forthcoming entry.

Additionally, the official website allows gamers to register for VIP status, which gives them "access to limited content, including screenshots, videos, forums, as well as access to VIP-only contests and swag. VIPs also receive priority status for COD events," according to an email Big Download received earlier.

"Those who become a VIP before July 25, 2008 will be entered into a sweepstakes for a chance to get their name (along with three friends' names) into Call of Duty: World at War," the email continued.

Call of Duty: World at War trailer

Gametrailers.com has received the world exclusive Call of Duty: World at War (previously Call of Duty 5) trailer, which offers a brief cinematic glimpse at the next installment in the CoD franchise.

Developed by Treyarch, the studio responsible for Call of Duty 3, CoD: World at War will examine a darker side of World War II. According to a preview article published in the UK edition of Official Xbox Magazine, players will combat a "new, seemingly alien fighting force."

Here's hoping that "alien" is meant only in the figurative sense.
