Interview: Riot Games talks about League of Legends

The new Los Angeles based game developer Riot Games made a big splash a few weeks ago when they first announced their plans for League of Legends. Their fantasy based PC action-strategy game is in a way a stand alone extension of the popular Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients.

Big Download wanted to get some more info about both Riot Games and their plans for League of Legends. We sent a number of questions for the team to answer and they responded in kind (we were told that more than one person answered the questions so the credit for the answers will be given to Riot Games).

Blizzard two disk music CD announced

If you love the musical soundtracks for the games created by Blizzard then you may be in for one heck of a treat next month. Music 4 Games has revealed plans to publish The Music of Blizzard Entertainment: Echoes of War, a two disk CD of various themes from Blizzard's games as performed by the Eminence Symphony Orchestra.

The CD package will have 70 minutes of music from Blizzard's games include tracks from unreleased games like Starcraft II, Diablo III and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. Two versions of the product will be released. The standard edition with just the music CD will go on sale Nov. 22 for $29.95. A "Legendary" edition will be released on Nov. 1 for $49.95 and will include the two CD disk along with a DVD that has behind-the-scenes footage of the recording sessions and more, along with a 32 page booklet and nine artcards.

Alt-Tab: Activsion before Blizzard?

We've all been told that Blizzard wasn't -- and continues to not be -- affected by Activision. But is that really the truth? I hadn't questioned the claim until recently, when changes began to trickle out of BlizzCon 08.

At first, there was an announcement of a new StarCraft II singleplayer addition each year, for the next three years. Blizzard says: We wanted to make so much StarCraft II, that we needed to split it into three separate games that each need around a full year of development -- huzzah! I was ecstatic, it was Blizzard-nerd nirvana. Then these pesky questions began creeping into the forefront of my mind, buzzing about like infuriating flies that refuse to leave your room on a particularly hot summer day.

Starcraft II, Warcraft III head to mainland China

Earlier today Blizzard Entertainment announced plans to bring Starcraft II and various back catalog titles, including Warcraft III, to mainland of China. In the three-year licensing deal with NetEase.com, Shanghai EaseNet Network Technology Limited will bring the Battle.net Platform and various Blizzard titles to the Chinese gaming market.

"This partnership is a sign of our continued commitment to our players in China and to the local industry," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment.

In the terms of the agreement Shanghai EaseNet Network Technology Limited will bring the classic titles; Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, the Battle.net platform and StarCraft II -- when it is made available -- to mainland China.

New Warcraft III patches available

Talk about a boatload of patches. Blizzard just patches both the original Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne recently. You can either obtain the patch by logging on to battle.net, or by download it from us. There's a massive amount of patches, though, and in this case the Mac users have the advantage, as PC users must patch up to 1.21b before they can apply the new patch.

WRUP: Nowhere nearly enough Mass Effect edition

This has been an exciting week in PC gaming! The release of Mass Effect, more information on the highly anticipated StarCraft II, and Valve has decided to let us back things up via the upcoming Steam Cloud service. (This is, of course, after most of us spent last week playing On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness - Episode One.) Going into this weekend we figured it would be a no-brainer as to what most of the Big Download staff would be playing....

Steven Wong, our fearless all around bad-mutha and Managing Editor is playing Mass Effect as we expected, but will be adding a side of Age of Conan and possibly some City of Heroes or City of Villains in the mix. Samuel Axon, blogger and caffeine fiend will be kickin' it old-school in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Deus Ex. John Callaham and David Craddock, aside from being our esteemed (and crazy workaholic) leads, will both be spending time playing on Steam. John's planning on spending time in Team Fortress 2, and David's got his sights set on jumping into the Get a Life mod for Half-Life 2. (Well, and he'll be checking out some mods for WarCraft III for an upcoming column, but that's work.) As for me, I have a copy of Mass Effect for my PC, and of course will be continuing my own all-over-the-place MMOG adventures for Massively.

How about you all? Will you be jumping into Mass Effect as well, or are you still playing through OtRSPoD? Perhaps you're more interested in fragging the crap out of people in TF2 after a (not very) long week? Tell us, What aRe yoU Playing this weekend?

Top 10 best selling PC games for April revealed

While the NPD Group has a weekly list of the top 10 best selling PC games in the US, they also go back and look at the overall monthly chart as well. For April, the top 10 list is dominated by Blizzard; it has four games in the top 10 including the number one best selling title World of Warcraft: Battle Chest (which has the original MMO game and the first expansion pack Burning Crusade in one package). Electronic Arts also did well; it has three Sims 2 titles in the top 10.

Ubisoft's PC port of Assassin's Creed debuted at number two in April while Activision's Call of Duty 4 continues to sell well at number three. The sleeper hit of the year, Sins of a Solar Empire from Ironclad Games and Stardock, sticks with the list at number seven. May should see some major changes in the list with the debuts of Age of Conan and the PC version of Mass Effect, among others.

  • 1 World Of Warcraft: Battle Chest - Blizzard
  • 2 Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut Edition - Ubisoft
  • 3 Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Activision
  • 4 The Sims 2 Kitchen & Bath Interior Design Stuff - Electronic Arts
  • 5 The Sims 2 Free Time - Electronic Arts
  • 6 World Of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade - Blizzard
  • 7 Sins Of A Solar Empire - Ironclad Games/Stardock
  • 8 The Sims 2 Double Deluxe - Electronic Arts
  • 9 World Of Warcraft - Blizzard
  • 10 Warcraft III Battle Chest - Blizzard

Blizzard launches digital download game store

Wow! You would have thought that Blizzard would have started this kind of service sooner with the success of programs like Steam, Direct2Drive and others. However, the PC game developer has finally gotten into the digital download business for games with the launch of the new download section of the Blizzard Store.

The section is pretty bare at this point. At the moment only three games are available; Warcraft III, its expansion pack The Frozen Throne ($19.99 for each) and the Starcraft Anthology (the original and the expansion collected for $14.99). However we hope that older Blizzard games will make themselves available on the new download store in the near future. Of course, if Blizzard decides to release its long awaited sci-fi RTS sequel Starcraft II on its new digital download store we will bet the house, camper and the condo on the beach that their servers will need a major upgrade.
