Walmart launches Gamecenter web site

We know it may be hard to believe but Walmart is now one of the few retail stores that has a prominent PC game presence. Now the massive retailer is letting the word out on their new Walmart Gamecenter dedicated web site. It's a mix of selling stuff and some pseudo journalism with exclusive video features featuring game previews and interviews for upcoming game titles.

Clearly Walmart wants to go after the Gamestop crowd with this new online venture. While Gamestop has some exclusive pre-order bonuses, Walmart is offering $10 and $20 eCards for select game titles. The eCards can be used to purchase anything at Walmart.com.

StarCraft II Collector's Edition getting harder to pre-order

We knew that the pre-orders for StarCraft II would likely be huge but it looking like the retail Collector's Edition of the upcoming Blizzard sci-fi RTS sequel is getting harder to find. IncGames is reporting that a number of major retailers, including GameStop and Amazon.com in the US, are no longer taking orders for the $100 collector's edition which has a ton of extras besides the game itself. Indeed the Collector's Edition is no longer showing up on GameStop's web site and Amazon.com's listing for the edition only shows a third party selling the game for a whopping $499.

However, all is not lost. Best Buy's web site is still taking pre-orders for the collector's edition as is WalMart's web site, NewEgg.com and even Toysrus.com. However it's very likely that this version will have all of its copies claimed by pre-orders before StarCraft II ships to stores on July 27.

More pre-order specials announced for Star Trek Online

The other retailers and download sites participating in the pre-order program include Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Direct2Drive and Steam. Each retailer offers up their own unique pre-order special and all of them give their customers access to the game's upcoming Open Beta event and the Early Start event which lets players get online three days before the official February 1 launch. Modern Warfare 2 PC pricing going up for some retailers but not all

If you are a PC gamer, you know that for the most part a title that comes out for multiple platforms is usually cheaper on the PC side. Now there's evidence that for at least some retailers, the PC price of Modern Warfare 2 is being raised up to console levels.

Pricing for the Infinity Ward-Activision FPS is listed at $59.99 for retailers like Amazon, Best Buy and GameStop. However that is not the case across the board. Walmart's web site shows that the PC version of the game is $49.82 and that it also comes with a $10 eGift card for online purchases online, effectively making the game $39.82. The lesson is pretty obvious; there's always a bargain somewhere. You just have to know where to look.
