Age of Chivalry offers screenshot update

It's been a while since the announcement was made that the Half-Life 2 multiplayer mod Age of Chivalry was going to become a stand alone commercial game using Epic Games' Unreal Development Kit. This week the game's official web site got a screenshot update showing off a couple of the title's levels (Battlegrounds and Stoneshill) and comparing them to the original levels made for the mod.

As you can see above the screenshots show a high level of detail in the art and textures, rivaling even the best from the big game developers. While there's no real word on the game's current status in this update we hope to do an interview with the team in the near future.

The Ball coming on October 26; pre-orders get Killing Floor special

The Ball is close to rolling its way to hard drive. This week publisher Tripwire Interactive announced that the first person puzzle-action game from developer Teotl Studios will be released on October 26. It's the first commercial PC game that will be released that was developed via Epic Games' Unreal Development Kit, the "free" version of Unreal Engine 3.

Pre-orders for the $19.99 game will begin on October 18 via Steam. People who pre-order The Ball and also own Tripwire's zombie shooter Killing Floor will be rewarded with a nice extra. The hero from The Ball will get to also be a playable character in Killing Floor.

Primal Carnage shows off new UDK-based screenshots and trailer

A few months ago we became aware of Primal Carnage, an upcoming and impressive looking indie first person shooter filled with dinosaurs from developer Lukewarm Media. We also did an interview with the developer's founder Ashton Anderson about the game last June. Since then the developer has been quiet about the game's progress but this week Lukewarm Media released new screenshots and a new gameplay trailer.

Why is this newsworthy? Because Primal Carnage is no longer using the Unigine for its graphics. The game has now switched over to the Unreal Development Kit with Anderson saying, "... the UDK was the clear choice to help us finish this game to the highest quality and deliver it to you; the fans." There's no word on a release date for the game yet. You can check out the new YouTube gameplay trailer with a big dino battle after the jump:

Epic: Unreal Development Kit has over 350,000 unique installs

Nearly a year ago Epic Games shocked the game industry by announcing the release of the Unreal Development Kit, a free version of its Unreal Engine 3 game development tools that lets anyone create and release stand alone games for free or for commercial release (with Epic getting royalties on the commercial games of course).

This week, Epic Games's VP Mark Rein announced via his Twitter page that the UDK tools has had over 350,000 unique installs which Rein says, " ... is pretty amazing for a game engine like ours." There's already been a ton of PC stand alone games and demos that use the UDK as its basis and more are on the way. In addition, the UDK will soon support making games for Apple's iOS devices like the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Another Unreal Tournament 3 mod, The Crucible, to go commercial

We have seen a number of Unreal Tournament and Unreal Tournament 3 based games go the commercial route with sometimes mixed results. Now yet another UT3 mod team is seeking to make a commercial game out of their project. The RuneStorm team has announced on that it has the "aim of going commercial" with its multiplayer shooter mod The Crucible.

The game is based on that old "Heaven vs Hell" game design chestnut where angels, demons and mortal fight to the finish. The development team update states, "The finished product will be a more rounded game and should feature more maps, characters, weapons and also a few other features." Additionally RuneStorm is also working on a second project about which no info has been revealed.

New UDK-based demo gives us some Terminator action

Last year's release of the Terminator Salvation game was greeted with poor reviews and just a few weeks later the shutdown of the game's developer GRIN. So its interesting that a newly released stand alone Terminator themed first person shooter demo is more entertaining than perhaps all of the previous commercial Terminator games.

The mod team The Original Studios are the creators of this brief 10 minute or so alpha demo made with Epic Games' Unreal Development Kit. It's got T-800's and Hunter-Killers to shoot at and generally a lot of stuff that blows up real good. The plan is apparently to turn this alpha demo into a full stand alone game at some point. You can download the UDK demo here at Big Download. You can also check out some gameplay footage after the jump:

Epic VP: "We're still the PC company"

Just a few years ago, Epic Games was thought of as mostly a PC game developer. However the massive success of the developer's Gears of War franchise for the Xbox 360 console has turned that perception around for many gamers. Indeed some recent comments by Epic President Mike Capps said Epic has moved more into console games "because the money's on console." However, Rock Paper Shogun has a brief chat with Epic Games VP Mark Rein who assures the interviewer that the company is still committed to the PC game industry.

Rein points out that Epic released and continues to update the free Unreal Development Kit, saying, "If you look at all the UDK games they're PC only at this point." And of course there's Bulletstorm, the upcoming first person shooter that Epic is developing with People Can Fly. Rein states, " . . . you'll see when it comes out, it will be a full-blown, oh-my-god amazing PC game." Ultimately Rein states, "So now the opportunity is swinging back the other way, the opportunity to show that we're still the PC company. And honestly I think Bulletstorm and UDK are firmly establishing us in the PC realm as still the big player there."
