Natural Selection 2 video shows off alien infestation prototype

Earlier this week we reported that an upcoming patch for the beta version of Natural Selection 2 would include a new vision mode for the alien faction players. Now developer Unknown Worlds has released a new YouTube video that shows off even more features that will be added to the beta version of the upcoming sci-fi FPS-RTS hybrid game.

The coolest new feature is one that's been promised for the game for a long time; the prototype for the game's dynamic alien infestation feature. Basically the alien side can generate a slime in the game's levels. The alien faction needs the infestation to build other aliens and structures and it must be maintained or it will die off. Again, the beta version of Natural Selection 2 is currently available for anyone who pre-orders the game now.

Next Natural Selection 2 patch to add alien vision feature

It's been a little while since we have reported on Natural Selection 2, the upcoming sci-fi first person shooter-RTS hybrid game from developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment. The game is still in its beta stage but new updates continue to be made to the title for people who have pre-ordered Natural Selection 2.

The next patch for the game, which should be released sometime today via Steam, should contain a new feature for the alien faction: alien vision mode. The above video shows off how the alien vision mode will work and should be helpful if the human faction managed to cut the power in the game's level. Remember you can still pre-order the standard edition of the game in order to access the beta test content.

Natural Selection 2 web site gives dev update on beta test

Natural Selection 2 entered its own version of the closed beta stage last Friday but since its release there have been some issues with the build. In its latest dev update on the Unknown Worlds Entertainment web site, the developer admits, "It's definitely disappointing to see that we missed some serious problems with the beta release"

The update details plans on what the dev team is working to fix in the next beta patch including server crashes, low frame rates and more. It states that a patch with those fixed should be going online sometime on Monday. If you still want to get in on the closed beta its still available for purchase for $34.99 at the game's official web site. The purchase will, of course, allow folks to get the final version of the game at no additional cost when its ready.

Natural Selection 2 closed beta begins

Natural Selection 2, as promised on Thursday, has started its closed beta test period. The upcoming sci-fi first person shooter-RTS game from developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment has some new content compared to the previous alpha test including the teleporting Fade alien creature that you can see decimate some Space Marines in the above video.

Access to the beta test will be limited to the first 10,000 people who pre-order the $34.95 game from Natural Selection 2's web site. Purchasing the game also includes access to its mod tools. The beta test will be updated on a regular basis via Steam.

Natural Selection 2 closed beta begins Friday; limited to first 10,000 pre-orders

Natural Section 2 will be getting one step closer to its official release very soon. Earlier this year developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment launched the playable alpha version of its long-in-development sci-fi RTS-FPS hybrid game. However the alpha version became unavailable for purchase once the test actually started.

Now Unknown Worlds has announced that the beta version of the game will finally be released on Friday via Steam. Folks who have already ordered the beta test or ordered and have played the alpha version will gain access to the beta build which will include the new alien Fade creature plus new alien structures and more content. Like the alpha test the beta build will also contain the game's mod tools for people to make their own levels for the game. Unknown Worlds will also be updating the beta on a weekly (more or less) basis). Access to the beta test will cost $34.95 but only 10,000 beta seats are secured; after those are set the beta will be made unavailable for purchase. Everyone who purchases the beta version will get free access to the final version of Natural Selection 2 when it is released

Our sister site Joystiq has a new cinematic trailer showing off the new alien (and Nightcrawler-like transported capable) Fade character which you can check out after the jump:

Natural Selection 2 shows off new flamethrower weapon

It's been a little while since we have had a development update for Natural Selection 2 but today the upcoming first person shooter-RTS hybrid game from developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment posted some info on its web site on a new in-game weapon, the flamethrower.

The primary trigger will be your basic cone of heat and flame coming out of the weapon which sets enemies on fire. There is now secondary trigger effect yet but the update says, " .. we have several ideas kicking around that we'd like to experiment with." The flamethrower will be the only weapon that will be able to half the alien's dynamic infestation abilities. You can check out a brief video of the weapon in action above this post. There's still no word on when Unknown Worlds plans to release the final version of Natural Selection 2.

Natural Selection 2 alpha test getting new content soon

The development team at Unknown Worlds Entertainment is still working hard on its long awaited FPS-RTS hybrid title Natural Selection 2. An alpha version of the game is playable for those folks who pre-ordered the (now unavailable) special edition of the game. This week the development team revealed that new content will be added to the next update to the alpha build.

The content will include the "Crag", one of four structures that can be built by the playable alien faction in the game. The structure has three different abilities. One is a "passive" feature which heals nearby players and structures. Another is a triggered feature called Umbra which causes smoke to come out of the Crag. The smoke basically cuts down attacks by Marine ballistic weapons by half. Finally the targeted feature lets the Crag spit out small aliens called Babblers that swarm a Marine to obscure his sight and do some small amount of damage. There's no word yet on when the next update will be released.

Natural Selection 2 gets first alpha patch for pre-orders

Last Monday, indie developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment released its playable alpha build of its upcoming first person shooter-RTS game Natural Selection 2 to people who pre-ordered the Special Edition of the game (the Special Edition versions is no longer for sale). Now the developer has issued its first patch for the alpha build via Steam.

The patch has quite a number of technical and gameplay bug fixes along with a few minor additions such as adding a welding effect to MAC and adding some new new marine commander icon artwork. The standard edition of the game is still available for pre-orders for $34.95 although people who pay for the game now will not get access to the alpha builds.

Natural Selection 2 alpha release at 9 pm ET; Special Edition version to end

The release of the first alpha version of Unknown Worlds Entertainment sci-fi FPS-RTS hybrid Natural Selection 2 is scheduled for release via Steam later tonight for people who pre-order the $39.95 version of the game. After the alpha build is released at 9 pm Eastern time for those pre-orders tonight the Special Edition will no longer be available for purchase. In addition pre-orders for the regular edition of the game, priced at $19.95, will go up in price after the alpha version is released.

As we reported previously the alpha build of the game will have one main map plus several smaller test maps along with the Marine playable character with several weapons, three playable aliens and more. The alpha test will be updated with new content in the weeks and months ahead.

Interview: Unknown Worlds' co-founder updates us on Natural Selection 2

It's taken a long time for developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment to get to this point but this week the independent game creator announced that a playable alpha version of Natural Selection 2 will be made available on July 26 for people who pre-order the $39.99 Special Edition of the sci-fi FPS-RTS game. If you want to get into the alpha you only have until that date to purchase the Special Edition. Once the alpha goes live the Special Edition won't be for sale any longer.

Big Download got Unknown Worlds founder Charlie Cleveland to briefly answer some questions about the upcoming alpha test including if mod makers can go ahead and put their own maps in the alpha build, how much longer until the "final" 1.0 version is release and more.
