GoG.com releases Tyrian 2000 for free

You thought that GoG.com was done for the year with cool game announcements and sales, didn't you? Au contraire, mon fraire, as Bart Simpson might say. On top of putting over 300 games on the price chopping block from now until January 3, the DRM-free PC gaming download site has just added a new title, the 1999 released top down sci-fi shooter Tyrian 2000.

That's pretty nice all by itself, but GoG.com has made the game available to download for FREE! Yep, you won't have to pay a dime to grab this classic shooter that has 12 different ships, lots of ship upgrades, over 100 weapons and more. Oh and it comes with the game's soundtrack as an additional freebie download. Pretty nice all around. You can check out a Freeware Friday article on the game right here at Big Download.

Freeware Friday: Tyrian

Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!

Back in the day, PC gamers had two great shareware shoot-em-ups to choose from: Raptor and Tyrian. While many chose Raptor (whose full name is Raptor: Call of the Shadows), the clear winner in terms of care and quality is Tyrian. Oozing professionalism from every pore, Tyrian sports some excellent pixel art, music, and gameplay elements. It was also the launching pad for Alex Brandon, whose may be better known for his work on Unreal Tournament or Deus Ex. However, the original programmer, in a fit of generosity, decided to release the games as freeware, and the game engine as open source. Thus, new generations can be exposed to the genius shmup gameplay of Tyrian... for free!
