Boot Disk: Rollercoaster Tycoon

Sometimes you just need to sit down, slide a floppy into your A: drive, and enjoy gaming retro style. We know this all too well! That's why we have a list of the best and brightest from days long gone. These are some of our favorite games of all time, and we're sure that you'll love them as much as we do, if not more. Welcome to Boot Disk, and enjoy the retro ride!

The tycoon genre of games is a popular one, and for good reason. The accessibility of a good interface mixed with the appeal of creating and managing your own business is a recipe for an instant hit. Not many games, however, can be truly said to be classics of the tycoon genre. As far as we know, there's only three games which really deserve that distinction. The first is Railroad Tycoon, one of Sid Meier's first games and the father of the modern business game. The second is Transport Tycoon, which was created by Chris Sawyer as a more in-depth transportation simulation than Railroad Tycoon. The final game, and the focus of this article, is Rollercoaster Tycoon, one of the most popular and enduring tycoon games of all time. It has snatched hold of the casual and hardcore market alike with excellent gameplay and interface, and is still popular to this day.

MMORPG Tycoon released, tycoon fans rejoice

One of the best entries in the TIGSource Procedural Generation Competition (along with Dyson and Rescue: The Beagles), MMORPG Tycoon is a game that sets you up as the director of a failing MMORPG company. And it's better than most commercial tycoon games to boot!

The game starts you off with the base of a failing MMORPG made by the previous director. It generates this randomly, and it has balance and other issues. Your goal is to balance the game and provide the players with enough of a fun gameplay to generate hype for the game. You can change levels in zones, place towns and respawn points, and change most aspects of how the game is run. The best part, though, is that you can look at the little players scurrying around if you zoom in close enough. It even lets you see what their stats are and what they are doing! You can download the game through the TIGSource forums.
