Phantasy Star Online 2 announced

The Tokyo Game Show is almost exclusively a console game event but today Sega made a major surprise announcement during TGS. PSO World reports that Sega intends to publish Phantasy Star Online 2 for the PC in 2011 in Japan. There's no word yet if the game will be released here in the US.

The announcement today was made in part to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the release of the original Phantasy Star Online. It was a online RPG with some persistent features and was released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000 and later for the PC. The US got a version of the game, Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst, several years later. So far Sega has announced no other info about the just revealed PC sequel.

Dead Rising 2 reveals game show-like multiplayer modes

Capcom decided to pull a planned demo of Dead Rising 2 from its E3 presentations last June (the H1N1 virus kept the game's key Japanese producer from attending) but at the Tokyo Game Show this week the zombie action sequel was back in full force as Capcom showed off the game's planned multiplayer modes.

Our sister site Joystiq got a chance to check out the action in a hands-on demo. As it turns out Dead Rising 2's multiplayer modes are in the context of a TV game show called Terror is Reality. You can see one of the mode's mini-games in the screenshot above as players use helmet with antlers (yes, helmets with antlers) to throw zombies in the air. It's all very "Smash TV" stuff and certainly sounds in line with the goofy style of the Dead Rising franchise. Too bad we still don't have a release date.

Epic Games to open office in Japan

Epic Games continues to expand its business to other parts of the world and this week at the Tokyo Game Show it was revealed that the developer will open up a new office in Japan. Our sister site Joystiq reports that the office will be based in Tokyo and will mainly be used to provide Unreal Engine customer support to Japanese-based development studios. However, Epic's president Mike Capps added that the office could expand to develop actual games.

This is just the latest in Epic's expansion plans. Besides their North Carolina home base they own two development studios in the West; Chair Entertainment in Utah and People Can Fly in Poland. They also operate Epic Games Korea for engine support and they are also involved (although more indirectly) in Epic Games China.

Second Alienware announcement teaser hints at . . . something

Earlier this week, Dell's Alienware gaming PC unit picked up the pace on the hints of their upcoming major announcements by relaunching their allpowerful.com site and releasing a YouTube teaser video. Today they have launched a second video teaser on YouTube that's . . . well, we are still scratching our heads over it, quite frankly.

What is known is that the announcements are coming on September 24 at the Tokyo Game Show which is normally a place just for console game announcements. Hopefully we can get a better idea of what Alienware has in mind before they unleash whatever it is they are planning to unleash (yeah, we know it will be some new PCs and laptops with some kind of new design but it's still fun to speculate).

Alienware to announce new products at next week's Tokyo Game Show

Dell's Alienware gaming PC unit is prepping for some major announcements and today they have relaunched their allpowerful.com web site to serve as a teaser to their future plans. The last time they made such a big deal about upcoming products it was for their Alienware Area 51 M17x laptop which was revealed last June at E3.

Alienware is taking an unusual move by making their big announcements at the Tokyo Game Show on September 24. That consumer-trade show is almost all console game oriented so having something that will likely be about PC gaming will be something different. You can also see a YouTube video which has even more teasers after the jump. By the way, those alien letters above . . . they spell out something that sounds sort of dire.

No more Ubidays for Ubisoft

In another sign that the newly revamped and larger E3 is gaining traction in the games industry, Ubisoft has announced it will not be holding its annual Ubidays press event as it has done in 2007 and 2008. The big press event for the publisher is being retired in favor of showing off its games at other events such as E3.

Ubisoft decided to hold its own Ubidays event after E3 switched over from being a large trade show to a small invite-only media event for the past two years. With E3 going back to a larger trade show format in 2009, Ubisoft will now be showcasing its upcoming games at E3 in early June, along with the new European GamesCon in August and the Tokyo Game Show this fall.

No Alan Wake at Tokyo Game Show 2008 after all?

There was a bit of excitement for people who have been following the development of Alan Wake for the past several years. The game, first announced in 2005 from developer Remedy, was named as a game its publisher Microsoft would show off at the Tokyo Game Show later this year. Well, it looks like that note was a tad premature.

According to a post on the game's official message board, a Remedy team member said that there was some confusion on the news, stating, " . . . . this was not an announcement that Wake would be shown at TGS 2008. Remedy's team is just getting back from a bit of holiday and we haven't had time to chat with Microsoft on upcoming shows/showings yet." While it's still possible that the game will be shown at TGS, this would seem to push those hopes on the back burner yet again.
