CellFactor: Psychokinetic Wars released for PC on Direct2Drive

Some of you may remember two free multiplayer-only first person shooter games released for the PC, CellFactor: Combat Training (2006) and CellFactor: Revolution (2007). Both games were designed as tech demos for the PhysX hardware chip before that company got bought by Nvidia in early 2008. In 2009, CellFactor: Psychokinetic Wars was released via download for the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles. The main hook of the game is that in addition to weapons, player could select from three different classes, each with its own telekenetic powers.

Now the game has finally been converted over to the PC platform and released with little fanfare over at Direct2Drive. The game appears to be a fairly straight port of the console title with 10 single player challenges for each of the three classes and four multiplayer modes with support of up to 16 players. You can get the game from developer Immersion Games and publisher Timeline Interactive for $9.95.

Author (and gamer) Michael Crichton passes away

One of the world's best known authors, Michael Crichton, has died at the age of 66. According to an AP report his family announced that the best selling author of books like Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain and others had finally succumbed to a long fight with cancer.

While Crichton was best known for his books he was also a known fan of PC games. He helped to create a graphical adventure game for the PC in 1984 called Amazon that sold well and was acclaimed for adding things like music and color graphics (something which adventure games had not had at the time). In 1999 he co-founded the PC developer Timeline Computer Entertainment. The developer released only one game before shutting down, a poorly received PC action game based on his time travel novel Timeline that came out via Eidos in 2000. In 2002, Sega announced it would be publishing a new game based on an original concept by Crichton but that game was never published.
