Latest Southpeak Games financial numbers revealed

Small publisher Southpeak Games has revealed its latest financial numbers for its latest fiscal quarter that ended on December 31, 2009. Revenues for the quarter came in at $10.1 million, which is lower than the company's numbers of $17.3 million from the same period a year ago. Southpeak had a net loss of $2.6 million for the quarter, which is less than the $1.2 million in net income it received from the same period a year ago.

Part of the reason for the lower numbers was a $3.1 million loss due to a court fight in the UK with CDV. Southpeak is also dealing with another lawsuit filed by TimeGate Studios, who claims that Southpeak has withheld royalties from sales of their recent sci-fi shooter Section 8.

Feature: Black Ops PC Games For 2010

It's been an interesting last 12 months for games on our "Black Ops" list. These are the games that we know are under development but officially unannounced. A few months ago we talked about the Black Ops games that were finally brought out into the light in 2009.

But there are still a ton of games that are being made under a cloak of darkness (or at least under a very grey coat). We decided to go back and remind you of at least some of these games that will hopefully get their day in the sun . .. somday.

TimeGate files lawsuit against Southpeak over Section 8 royalties

Section 8 developer TimeGate Studios has filed yet another lawsuit related to their recent sci-fi shooter. This time the group getting the nasty letter is none other than the game's publisher SouthPeak Games. According to documents obtained by our sister site Joystiq, Timegate is alleging that, among other things, SouthPeak has withheld royalty payments and has mislead Timegate about the sales of the game.

This is the third lawsuit that TimeGate has filed concerning Section 8. The first two were against the ABC TV network and Paramount Pictures with TimeGate accusing both of violating their Section 8 trademarks. Both of those lawsuits were later settled out of court.

Section 8 PC gets downloadable map pack

In a development that apparently not even the game's own PR people were aware of, Timegate Studios has released a new map pack for the PC version of their sci-fi shooter Section 8. The three level Seek and Destroy map pack contains Devil's Backbone (set in a geothermal plant), Hornet's Nest (on a desert location) and Azure Basin (overlooking a hydroelectric dam). The maps can be used in both multiplayer and Instant Action mods. The map pack also adds 10 new Games For Windows Live achievements.

Now for the bad news; this map pack isn't free. If you have the game you will have to fork over 560 Microsoft Points (about $7) to download the map pack via Games For Windows Live.

Timegate Studios prepping for new first person shooter game and MMO

Timegate Studios used to be an RTS game developer but recently has turned its attention to making first person shooter games. It's latest release is the sci-fi themed Section 8 for Southpeak Games. Now it looks like the Texas-based developer is already looking to hire for its next FPS project.

The company's official Twitter page has announced that the company is looking for a new "Sr. Environment Artist for a next-gen first person shooter." That's obviously a big clue as to what their next game might be about. Timegate is also working on an MMO project for some time. While there are no additional details on that game today it was announced that the MMO project will use the Vision Engine for its graphics..

Review: Section 8

The legacy of the Tribes series of games is legendary in the first-person shooter community. It's just that much fun, accessible, and innovative. Its influence will likely never die, and many games will attempt to live up to the legend. Timegate's Section 8 has often been compared to Tribes directly, and for good reason, as a lot of similar features and thematic elements are in place. The kicker is that Section 8 really does live up to all of it, and is easily one of the best multiplayer shooters I've played in a long time. Certainly the best of 2009.

No Section 8 PC demo planned

Developer Timegate Studios just released the PC version of their sci-fi first person shooter Section 8 on Friday but even though the developer gave PC gamers a chance to beta test the game before its release it looks like those waiting for a formal PC demo will be disappointed.

According to a post on the game's official message boards by a Timegate member, "We do not have plans to release a Section 8 demo for the PC at this time. Currently, we only have a demo for the Xbox 360 version." As we mentioned before, Timegate does plan to release dedicated servers for the game that will allow them to host both PC and Xbox 360 players (although there's no true cross-platform multiplayer support).

This Week In PC Games: August 31-September 6

The fall PC game release season begins this week with three titles; a super hero MMO, a sci-fi multiplayer shooter and an a cute looking action games from the creators of, oddly enough, the Hitman games.

Champions Online: Cryptic Studios' long awaited next super hero MMO (based on the long running pen-and-paper RPG series, officially launches today. The series blends in a lot of what Cryptic created for City of Heroes (the extensive character creation tool, the fast action) with a bigger variety of locations and a more "cartoony" art style.
