Review: Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight

One thought that nagged at us, seconds into playing Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, was that the newest sequel wasn't really a Command & Conquer game. Sure, all the story aspects are present: The struggle between GDI and Nod forces; a world that's grown mostly uninhabitable by uncontrolled tiberium growth; live action full motion video cut scenes featuring Joe Kucan as Kane glowering at you. However, all the gameplay that fans have grown to know has been completely revised to something that's barely recognizable. C&C 4 does away with most of the base building, tank rushing, and many other elements one normally associates with the experience. In its place is something wholly different, but not necessarily better.

Command & Conquer animated comic prepares for an all-new war

Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight releases next week on March 16th, and this animated motion comic helps set the mood while bringing players up to speed on what's been going on. Perhaps it's a bit overdramatic, but it definitely gets the message that the world is in turmoil, and not everyone agrees with the alliance between GDI and the former Nod leader, Kane. It's hard enough to just get along with people from different tiberium infected zones on the homefront.

Command & Conquer 4 video takes a tour of the ship set

Although the Command & Conquer series is still one of the few games to use live action video cinematics for its cut scenes, the detail has largely grown past its origins of a bunch of people standing in front of a green screen. Now, similar to the production of an actual show, actors and cameras move through a small set on Command & Conquer 4. This video tours through the insides of "The Global Stratospheric Transport", the ship where players will be spending most of their time receiving intel briefings and going from mission to mission. Command & Conquer 4 releases on March 16.

Command & Conquer 4 dev diary plays nice in multiplayer

One of the defining features of Command & Conquer, after players have moved past the single player campaign, is a chance to test skills in multiplayer. In previous games, players have taken on largely isolated roles, even when they're on the same team. In C&C 4, players will be able to select specific classes for offense, defense and support. In choosing a class that matches their respective strengths, players can come together and form a super team - one player specializing in offensive strikes while the other builds formidable defenses to protect the base.

This feature also carries over to the single player experience. C&C 4 will have a fully cooperative campaign, but very different from what was seen in Red Alert 3. Like in competitive multiplayer, players can select roles that play to their strength, drastically impacting the game's dynamic. Gamers will have a chance to put their teamwork skills to the test when the game releases on March 16.

C&C 4 cinematic trailer approaches ascension

The latest cinematic trailer for Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight provides new clues to the game's story, which has been about fifteen years in the making. Players will have a opportunity to defect from GDI during the course of the campaign and find out what ascension really means. C&C 4 will conclude the storyline that began with the first game and releases on March 16. The public multiplayer beta is currently active.

Command & Conquer 4 dev video talks about the future of controlling tiberium

More so than ever, the newest Command & Conquer 4 developer video demonstrates exactly how different the upcoming game will be compared to its predecessors. One tremendous shift that impacts both the look and feel of the C&C universe is that for the first time, humanity has finally gotten the spread of tiberium under control and can manage it as a resource. That means those giants fields of tiberium that have become almost signature to the series will be gone. However, players will still need to compete against each other for the resource. They collected tiberium will show up on set point on the map, and players must capture them and bring them back to the base. Or, in certain scenarios, they can be detonated for a devastating effect.

C&C4 gameplay walkthrough video mixes the old with the new

This gameplay walkthrough video for Command & Conquer 4: Tiberium Twilight takes players through the "Transport Down" mission that's included in the single player campaign. It looks like the Forgotten faction, a group of mutated humans, might be playing a stronger role in the upcoming game. Hopefully, they'll be more than just neutral fodder, considering how they played a huge role in the second C&C game but were barely mentioned in the third. However, the one big thing to take away is that the gameplay in the fourth installment is far different from any of the games that have come before. Not only will many of the units get an overhaul, but players will have to think about how and when to upgrade them. Players will also have to take unit caps and control points into consideration.

Among one of the most significant changes involves how buildings are captured. It looks like the developers will be trading in the precious engineers for a more straightforward approach. Players will have to bring units in range of the structure, eliminate the opposition, and hold the area until the building is captured. Damaging the building speeds up capture, but this is certainly a very different gameplay dynamic. We'll just have to see how it all balances out when the game releases on March 19, 2010. Pre-order customers automatically qualify for beta sign-ups.
