Boot Disk: Max Payne

Sometimes you just need to sit down, slide a floppy into your A: drive, and enjoy gaming retro style. We know this all too well! That's why we have a list of the best and brightest from days long gone. These are some of our favorite games of all time, and we're sure that you'll love them as much as we do, if not more. Welcome to Boot Disk, and enjoy the retro ride!

The inclusion of what is described as "bullet time" can be seen as a cliche'd, trite addition made to drum up sales. This wasn't always the case, though. Not even 10 years ago, most games did not have bullet time or some analog thereof. It took one game to both coin the term and give rise to its inclusion in virtually every game under the sun. That game is Max Payne, and despite some flaws, it is a dark, bloody masterpiece that any action fan must play. It also helps that - despite being released quite some time ago - it is available through Steam. So let's take a grim look at this noir-inspired massacre of the underworld.

In All You Need To Know we provide information to help you fully appreciate what these upcoming games have to offer.

Playing For Free: CrimeCraft

Each week we find more and more free games that do not quite fit into the freeware mold. Games that do not require a subscription fee to play, but encourage player usage of money through microtransactions or special subscription services. This is Playing For Free, a column that showcases these games.

Once again, we return to the realm of free-to-play MMO shooters. We've covered Quake Live, Battlefield Heroes, and even Combat Arms, so maybe it's time to tackle something a little more new. CrimeCraft was released in August, and quickly went to the "free unlimited trial" system that boils down to being free-to-play. It's not great, and certainly not better than other free-to-play MMO shooters like Combat Arms (even with insane community), but it's passable and, at least on the surface, unique.
