Direct2Drive holds a Halloween themed PC game sale

"Our prices are so low, they are scary!" Hey it was too good to resist. Actually that's just what the Direct2Drive web site is doing right now as it has cut the prices on a number of their horror-themed (and other M-rated) PC games for download. Some of the games have been cut down to as low as $4.95. The sale prices end on Sunday:

The games priced at $4.95 include Stubbs The Zombie, The Path, Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines, Cold Fear and Downfall. In addition, BioShock, Damnnation and Far Cry 2 are priced at $9.95 and The Witcher and Dead Space get a price cut down to $19.95

IndieCade begins today

Games from independent developers continue to gain more and more traction, especially in this economy with smaller development teams making titles that are original and outside the normal mainstream game design. Beginning today in Culver City, California (just outside of LA), the annual IndieCade festival puts the spotlight on that growing genre.

From now until Sunday, the festival will showcase a number of indie game titles including well known games such as The Maw, Zeno Clash, and The Path. In addition to showing the games, there will be speeches and panel discussions with people like Will Wright who will give the keynote speech on Saturday night. Tickets for the event are being sold at the IndieCade web site.

Tale of Tales reveals details on next game, Fatale

Earlier this year indie game developer Tale of Tales got a ton of critical praise for The Path, their adventure title based loosely on the Red Riding Hood children's tale. Now they are starting to reveal details about their next game, Fatale, which is based on more adult material.

The game's official web site has revealed one of the game's main characters, Salome. Indeed the game itself is based on the Oscar Wilde play Salome, where the title character is spurred by John The Baptist and gets his head cut off for his trouble. In the game version, Salome's character design was created by Takayoshi Sato who was one of the artists behind the first two Silent Hill games. Fatale is due for release on October 5 for the PC.

Steam launches their own indie game bundle sale

Not to be outdone by Direct2Drive's previously announced indie game sales bundle, the folks at Valve have decided to hold their own sale on Steam that lowers the cost of getting into the indie games scene. From now until Monday you can buy all the games below in one collection for just $29.99. That's a price cut from $119.90 if each game were bought seperately

Audiosurf
Blueberry Garden
Braid
Crayon Physics Deluxe
Darwinia
Everyday Shooter
Gish
Mr. Robot
The Path
World of Goo

If that's just too much indie game action for your blood you can also purchase Blueberry Garden, Braid, Everyday Shooter, The Path and World of Goo together in a bundle for just $19.99. That's compared to a normal $59.95 price

Direct2Drive offers indie game bundle for super low price

If you want to support independent game developers but don't want to spend a lot of money doing it, Direct2Drive's latest game sale is just up your alley. They have collected five recent indie games into one bundle and for a limited time you can get all five for a super low price.

The bundle includes the tower defense game Defense Grid, the odd adventure game The Path, the weird looking first person action game Zeno Clash, the political simulation-strategy title Democracy 2 and the puzzle title Cogs. All five can be yours now for just $17.75. Normally you would have to pay $77.75 to buy each title separately. There's no word on how long this bundle deal will last.

New games added to GameTap premium and free subscriber service

As they always do on Thursdays, the subscriber-download PC game site GameTap has added a couple of new games to its paid premium subscription service. One is Rise of the Argonauts, the Greek myth-themed action-RPG from developer Liquid Entertainment and publisher Codemasters that was first released last December.. The other new game is The Path, the acclaimed and very creepy adventure game based on the Red Riding Hood legend from developer Tale of Tales..

In addition a new game is scheduled to be placed in GameTap's free subscriber section for the next week. That would be Cradle of Rome, the puzzle game from developer Awem Studio.

Download: The Path - Prologue Demo

"Instead of extracting part of The Path and releasing it as a free trial, this is a brand new chapter, similar to parts of the game, but not the same. It gives you a free taste of the atmosphere of The Path.

In The Path - Prologue, you control the mysterious Girl in White. There's not a lot of gameplay in this demo. It's just about exploring the forest and pondering the sights. A prologue should show what happened before the events in the story... But in this case, it may seem like it's showing things that happened after. A mystery that will make more sense after playing the full game." The full game may be purchased for 10 dollars via the official website or through Steam.

Mac Monday: The Path

The Path, by Tale of Tales, is ... a game. I say it's a game because you can fail at it, therefore there is a goal that can be failed. What that goal is is largely incomprehensible ... at least in the early stage of exploration. I'm willing to admit that there is a point to be made, but it's very hard to tell sometimes.

I also get that many people will have problems with this game because -- and this is acknowledged by its designers -- it is Art. As such, it attempts to directly interface with your emotions, and this can make playing it difficult. Find out why, after the jump.

What's new in PC games this week: March 16-22

There's an action-flying game, a historical empire strategy game, a WWII RTS title and a couple of interesting downloadable games in store for PC gamers this week:

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X
Ubisoft launches yet another game in their Tom Clancy branded line of titles with this near-future flying action title. This game is also notable as it incorporates other Tom Clancy game series into its storyline.

The Path trailer gets poetic

The launch trailer for The Path might a little unsettling in some ways, but it sets the tone for this unusual fairy tale adventure. The independently developed horror game is scheduled to release on March 18th.

"The Path is a modern retelling of Little Red Ridinghood. The player controls six sisters who are sent out, one by one, to bring their sickly grandmother a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine. The path to her house is straight and short and no obstacles prevent you from swiftly completing your mission. But what about that forest along the way?
Mother told you not to enter it! But isn't that how the story goes? Aren't you supposed to meet the wolf?"
