After a bit of a breather, PC gamers get a solid list to choose from in terms of new PC game releases this week:

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena: Vin Diesel's sci-fi franchise may not be as popular as the Fast and Furious movie franchise but this new game from developer Starbreeze Studios and publisher Atari does return Diesel's character of Riddick back in the FPS game genre. With an all-new single player campaign, a graphically revamped version of the 2004 game The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and new multiplayer modes there's quite a lot of Riddick to go around this time.

These two video for The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena provide more insight into the upcoming game. The one featured above, entitled "Enemies of Riddick" gives a quick introduction to some of the major characters foolish enough to stand in Riddick's way. Of course, nothing would be complete without a little bloodshed, so continue reading after the jump to view the "Drone Mile" gameplay video. The game is scheduled to release next week.

This developer diary for The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena discusses the Dark Athena itself, a mercenary ship run by Captain Revas. Riddick is caught aboard the vessel and discovers the Ghost Drone program, which allows mercenaries to use modified human hosts to fight remotely. It's been in development for a long time but today publisher Atari has announced that The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena has finally gone gold. As previously announced the movie-based sci-fi first person action game "starring" actor Vin Diesel will ship to stores for the PC and other platforms on April 7 in the US and April 24 worldwide.

Here's a refresher on the rather convoluted development of this game. Dark Athena is a (sort of) sequel to the 2004 released Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay but also includes the original game with enhanced graphics and also a new multiplayer mode. Developed by Starbreeze Studios for its original publisher Vivendi Games the title got stuck in limbo thanks to Vivendi's merge with Activision to form Activision Blizzard. When that company's management decided to dump the game Atari picked it up for release. And yes it is a tad confusing . . . .

The second developer diary for The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena discusses the creative approach in imagining what the environments, characters and technology would look like in the Riddick universe. Its design takes on a dark and gritty look. Players will have a chance to run through the dangerous corridors of The Dark Athena when the game releases next month.

This gameplay trailer for The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena takes viewers out into space, where he blasts away enemies and leaves them to float away. The woman talking into Riddick's headset is Captain Revas, voiced by Michelle Forbes, who also voiced Dr. Judith Mossman in Half-Life 2. The game is expected to release for consoles and the PC in April. Be aware that this trailer has some mature language in it.
