Terminator: Salvation PC retail copies recalled

On Tuesday we reported that people who had bought the retail PC copy of Terminator: Salvation had their enjoyment terminated when the game would not install from the CD-Rom. Today the game's official message board has posted up word that because of this error all PC retail copies are being recalled and new copies (without the error) are being made to ship to stores.

According to the post, "The new copies will be on store shelves in a few days. A replacement plan for all end users that purchased the defective units is currently being set up. Details to get a replacement copy will be announced shortly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused the end users that purchased the defective copy." This apparently does not affect any PC version that was downloaded via services like Steam.

Install issue found in Terminator Salvation PC retail version

The just released movie-to-game adaptation Terminator Salvation has apparently got a major show-stopping bug for the retail PC version of the game. The game's official message board has a long thread full of people who cannot install the game from the CD. Instead they have encountered an error message (-5006:0x80070002) when clicking the .exe file.

This apparently is just for the retail box copies of the game; the downloadable versions that can be found on Steam, Direct2Drive and other locations don't appear to have this install bug. A person who identified himself as a GRIN dev team member posted on the message board "The issue is being investigated, and we will get back to you asap". To make matters worse it appears that the support email address and phone number for the game's publisher, Evolved Games, do not work either.

[Thanks Brad for the heads-up]

Terminator: Salvation game used for downloadable machinima series

The Terminator: Salvation game is due to ship to stores today and will also be made available via digital download. However the game is also being used to create a new six part machinima series. The series tells a prequel story to the game and movie as it reveals how one of its characters Blair Williams (voiced by its movie and game voice actor Moon Bloodgood) met up with John Connor's resistance movement against Skynet.

The machinima series used the assets of the game, developed by GRIN, to create the original story. You can download the first part of the series from several locations including iTunes and Amazon Video On Demand. A new episode will be released every week until its conclusion. Individual episodes cost $1.99 each or $2.99 for the high def version. You can get a season pass for all six parts for $9.99 in standard definition and $14.99 for the high definition version.

This Week In PC Games: May 18-24

Two third-person shooters debut this week in stores and via download; one is a "steampunk" game with lots of vertical environments while the other is the latest movie-to-game adaptation.

Damnation: Codemasters brings this third person "steampunk" game to stores and via download this week from newcomer developer Blue Omega Entertainment. Based on a free Unreal Tournament 2004 mod that was released several years ago, this title is obviously much expanded with lots of vertical levels, drivable vehicles and full multiplayer support.

Feature: Using PhysX to improve game effects and even gameplay

As mentioned earlier this morning, Nvidia announced more game support for PhysX technology, which uses hardware acceleration via drivers for their GeForce GPU graphics card chips to improve the look of games. Last week Nvidia held conference calls with three of the four development teams that will be using PhysX in upcoming PC game games. The only developer that did not attend was Biart, which is currently developing the shooter U-Wars.

Developer GRIN has had a busy year. It have already released Wanted: Weapons of Fate two more games will be released next month. The first is Capcom's Bionic Commando revamp which has already announced its support of PhysX. The other is Terminator: Salvation, the movie based shooter that Nvidia has now confirmed for PhysX support.

Nvidia announces more game support for PhysX

A little over a year ago, PC graphics chip maker Nvidia announced it was buying Ageia, a company that was selling a hardware chip add-on for PCs and software tools specifically for improving game physics effects. Since then, Nvidia has incorporated Ageia's technology, known as PhysX, into its driver updates for the GeForce graphics chips. Today Nvidia announced that four upcoming games will incorporate PhysX support. In addition, Nvidia also announced that game publisher Sega has licensed the PhysX tech for all of its worldwide studios.

The four new PhysX enabled PC games are Terminator Salvation from developer GRIN, Dark Void from developer Airtight Games and publisher Capcom, Darkest of Days from developer 8monkey Labs and U-Wars from developer Biart Studios. Stay tuned as Big Download will have a feature article later this morning that will have more info on how these games will use PhysX.
