Yep, we've been a little slack on the Bits and Bytes side this week. Our sincere apologies for those of you who read this part of the blog. Things should be back on track next week:

Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - August 20

Let's put this week to bed, shall we? It's been a long and busy one for us here. And then we have PAX Prime coming in two weeks. Yipe!

Team Fortress 2 Scout class update released

Just a few hours before Tuesday ends in the US, Valve has now launched the new update for their multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2. As we have been reporting for the last week the update, launched via Steam, adds a number of unlockable achievements for the Scout class.

Reaching those achievements give players access to three new weapons/items, the double barrel shotgun Force-A-Nature, the baseball bat-ball stunner weapon Sandman and the Bonk energy drink that increases a Scout's speed for a few seconds. Three new community made maps and a revised version of a previous map were also released in the update.

People who were speculating that today might also reveal a new gameplay mode for Team Fortress 2 were disappointed. The final reveal on the TF2 Scout update web site was merely the results of last night's poll question where players let Valve know they wanted to unlock the Force-A-Nature weapon first for the Scout class, followed by the Sandman and Bonk.

New shotgun for Team Fortress 2 Scout class revealed

As hinted at in the descriptions for the new Scout class achievements, today's (later than usual) Team Fortress 2 web site update officially revealed that players would be able to unlock the "Force-A-Nature" double barreled shotgun when the update is released later on Tuesday.

The weapon seems to be pretty powerful since the description states that if your character happens to be in the air when it's fired it will push you even higher. However it only holds two shells and has a slow reload rate. The update also has a way to order a Scout class T-shirt from Valve and a poll that asks its users which of the three new unlocabke items (the baseball bat-ball combo Sandman, the Bonk energy drink or the shotgun) should be made available to all Team Fortress 2 players.

More maps revealed for Team Fortress 2 Scout update

Valve has once again updated their Team Fortress 2 web site with even more info on about what to expect next week from the big Scout content update for their multiplayer shooter. Today another new community map, Egypt, was revealed along with some new screenshots that we have added to the gallery.

The level, created by community team member Sean 'Heyo' Cutino, is said to be a Dustbowl-style map but with the obvious ancient Egpyt art theme. In addition a prevously released community-mad map, Fastlane, will be re-released with lots of changes. Expect the maps to be released along with all the other new content when the Scout update is released via Steam on Tuesday.

Team Fortress 2 Scout update achievements; new 'Bonk' energy drink

Valve continues to tease and taunt us with today's update on their Team Fortress 2 web site. Today they have revealed all of the achievements that you can unlock for the Scout class when the next update to the game is released on Tuesday. While both the achievements and icons for each have been announced that's all we know about them so far.

More to the point is the reveal of a new Scout pick-me-up item, the "Bonk" Atomic Punch energy drink ("fulla radiation" and "Now with Isotopes") Drinking this stuff will cause the already fast Scout to move even faster for a few seconds. Valve claims the Scout full of "Bonk" will even be able to dodge bullets. Neo would be proud. In the meantime check out the full list of achievements after the jump:

Team Fortress 2 Scout update to include two new maps

As promised, the official Team Fortress 2 web site has been updated today with even more info on what to expect for the upcoming Scout class update. This time the site has posted up word that two new Team Fortress 2 maps, made by community members, will be released as part of Valve's next update to the multiplayer shooter game.

One is called Watchtower (created by Joshua 'JoshuaC' Shiflet) and is an Arena-style map that is supposed to be very friendly for the Sniper class. The other map is titled Juction (created by Sean 'Heyo' Cutino) that is "full of tight spaces and short sight lines". Expect even more from the Scout update to be revealed in the days leading up to its release via Steam on Feb. 24.

Team Fortress 2 Scout update due next week; reveals new "weapon"

The long awaited Scout class update for Team Fortress 2 is finally set for release a week from today (Feb. 24) and today the game's official blog site has started the day-by-day reveal of what will be included in the update to Valve's multiplayer shooter.

One of the unlockable weapons that will be included with the Scout update is the "Sandman". It's basically a baseball bat and ball. Hitting the ball with a bat at an enemy team member will stun them with they come in contact with the ball. You can continue to swing and attack while they are stunned. The only issue? If you have the Sandman your Scout character can't double jump.
