Red Faction: Origins TV movie to debut on Syfy June 4

The latest attempt to make a descent movie out of a game franchise now has a date. The Syfy cable TV network has announced that Red Faction Origins will be shown on the channel on Saturday, June 4.

The two hour TV movie will be shown just a few days after developer Volition and publisher THQ release Red Faction: Armageddon, the fourth game in the sci-fi shooter franchise (shown above) with the Mars setting and the destructible environments. Red Faction Origins, which is a prequel to the store events of Red Faction Armageddon, could also serve as a back-door pilot for a possible Red Faction weekly TV series if the ratings are high enough.

Trion Worlds-Syfy MMO game now titled Defiance; due out in 2011

Trion Worlds launched its first MMO game, Rift, just a few weeks ago but the developer-publisher has at least two more titles in the worlds. One is the RTS MMO End of Nations with Petroglyph. The other is the long-in-development sci-fi MMO being made in collaboration with the Syfy cable TV network.

This week Syfy announced that the actual title of the Trion Worlds game will be Defiance and that the game is scheduled to launch sometime in 2011. The plan is still to launch a prime time TV series that will link to the game in some way. However specific gameplay details, beyond the fact that it will be a third person action shooter game, have still not been announced.

Red Faction Armageddon box art has Syfy Games logo

Red Faction Armageddon is due out this May and this week its publisher THQ released the box art design for the upcoming third person shooter title. You can check out the entire design after the jump but one thing that caught our eye was the "Syfy Games" logo on the box front.

The Syfy cable TV channel is creating a prequel movie for the game, Red Faction Origins, that will also be shown on the network this May. However this is the first indication that the game itself has some backing from the cable TV network. Big Download emailed THQ for comment and a PR rep replied, "Nothing new to announce at this time. Red Faction: Origins is still in production and we look forward to sharing more in the future."

Red Faction Origins TV movie to include veteran sci-fi actors

The Red Faction movie is scheduled to start production this week and today publisher THQ and the Syfy cable TV network announced the line-up of actors for the film, Red Faction: Origins. It's filled with a ton of veteran sci-fi actors, lead by the T-1000 himself Robert Patrick as Alec Mason, the main character from the last game in the sci-fi shooter series Red Faction Guerrilla.

The movie will also star Brian J. Smith, who played Lt. Matthew Scott in the recently canceled TV series Stargate Universe. He plays Alec Mason's son Jake Mason who in the movie is trying to find his lost sister on Mars. Jake Mason turns out to be the father of Darius Mason, the lead character (shown above) in the upcoming Volition developed third person action game Red Faction Armageddon.

Other actors in the movie include Kate Vernon (Ellen Tigh and, as it turned out, a Cylon on the Battlestar Galactica revival series) and Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto Jones of Torchwood), The movie is set to be shown on the Syfy network in May, around the time Red Faction Armageddon is scheduled to be released.

More info on Red Faction Syfy movie/TV show pilot

While plans for a TV movie based on Volition's Red Faction game franchise were first revealed a few months ago, today publisher THQ made it official today with its press release announcing Red Faction: Origins. The movie, made for the Syfy Channel cable TV network, is currently scheduled to air on the network in March 2011.

The story for the movie will take place before the events in the upcoming third person shooter Red Faction Armageddon which is also currently scheduled for release in March 2011. The movie, which will also serve as a pilot for a possible Red Faction TV series, will have the character of Red Faction Militia member Jake Mason who has found out that his long lost sister is a member of a group that is out to destroy the Red Faction. Bummer.

Battlestar Galactica Online trailer sparks a new battle between humans and Cylons

Based on the hit Syfy series, Battlestar Galactica Online will be a web based multiplayer online game that pits humans against Cylons. One of the first questions a fan might ask is how an online game would play out when we already know what the ending is? The answer, of course, is that this has all happened before and it will happen again. A better question is whether or not the player will be hanging around armies of Sixes and Boomers if playing for the Cylons.

Syfy to produce Red Faction movie; could lead to TV series

Those goofy Saturday night movies on the Syfy cable TV network (ah, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus; we miss you) will be joined at some point by a Red Faction film. The Broadcast and Cable web site has announced that THQ's sci-fi shooter franchise will be the basis for a two hour movie on the cable network that will also serve as a back-door pilot for a potential TV series.

Syfy is getting more serious about cross-pollinating its programming with games. It already has a deal with Trion Worlds to co-develop a MMO game that will also link to a TV series. Similiarly, Syfy will have some kind of influence over the next Red Faction game by THQ.
