Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - September 16

Thursday always seems to be the busiest day of the week in terms of new game announcements. Why is that?

Supreme Commander 2 DLC confirmed

A week or so ago the latest big patch for Supreme Commander 2 seemed to add suppport for future DLC units. Now a new video confirms that the Gas Powered Games-developed sci-fi RTS game will be getting some extra content soon.

One unit that's confirmed for the DLC is the Monkeylord (shown above), the over-the-tip "big gun" unit that was a favorite of fans of the first Supreme Commander game. In addition Gamereplays.org has posted up a list of possible new units and maps from the upcoming DLC found in the latest update's files. Naturally this list could change when the DLC is actually released. You can check out the trailer showing the Monkeylord in action after the jump:

Supreme Commander 2 DLC coming?

On Tuesday Gas Powered Games released a massive patch for its sci-fi RTS game Supreme Commander 2 via Steam. That patch added a bunch of new features along with balance changes, bug fixes and more. It even added one new structure to the game. But is Gas Powered getting ready to offer up some actual new content to the game?

As PC Gamer pointed out there's a new option in the game for "No DLC Units". Since Gas Powered hasn't actually released any new units for the game this might be a big hint that something is coming. When asked about this odd feature on Steam's forums, a Gas Powered team member answered with "It's a secret! (At least until it's not a secret.)." Sounds like we will be learning more about this secret soon.

Supreme Commander 2 gets massive new patch

The team at developer Gas Powered Games hasn't forgotten to support its last released game, the sci-fi RTS sequel Supreme Commander 2. Today the title got a truly huge patch update via Steam that adds some new content, makes available some pre-order bonuses for all of the owners of the game and more.

You can check out the full patch list at the Steam web site and it's one of the longest we have seen in some time. There's a ton of unit balance changes, lots of AI changes and improvements, boatloads of bug fixes and more in this 1.2 patch. In addition the update contains a new structure, the Cybran Mass Convertor. Finally the five multiplayer maps (Emerald Crater, Iskellian Coast, QAI Prototype Facility, Seraphim VII Site and Weddell Isle) that were available only for people who pre-ordered Supreme Commander 2 can now be accessed by all owners of the game.

New head of Square Enix's US operations announced

Square Enix's US operations is getting an new head man. Gamasutra reports that Mike Fischer is the new president and CEO of Square Enix's US operations. Fishcher's previous gig was as Microsoft's consumer and online marketing officer for the UK territory and before that had worked with Sega and Namco in the US.

Ever since buying UK-based Eidos in early 2009, the Japanese-based Square Enix has made a bigger push towards Western games. Its upcoming PC line-up includes Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Kane and Lynch 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Final Fantasy XIV and Dungeon Siege III.

iBUYPOWER's MAGIC software turns any PC game into a multi-touch title

There's been a lot of talk about different interfaces for playing games. One of them is something that you can get right now; the ability to touch a screen to manipulate units, give commands and more. Now gaming PC maker iBUYPOWER has created a special software tool that, if you have the right hardware, will allow you to turn any game into one that supports touch screen manipulation.

The software, called MAGIC, allows players to create profiles for each game and then play them with any multi-touch supported monitor or laptop. The software can be downloaded for free at the iBUYPOWER web site. It does require Windows 7 and of course you have to have a multi-touch product for it to work (which, not so oddly, iBUYPOWER sells). You can check out a video of the software being used to play a game of Supreme Commander 2 after the jump:

Supreme Commander 2 on sale on Steam this weeekend for $11 [Update]

The Steam folks have launched their weekend sale deals and they have put in another big price cut to a game besides the already announced Shattered Horizon (which is on sale this weekend for just $9.99 along with a free weekend of play). For this weekend you can grab Gas Powered Games' recent sci-fi RTS game Supreme Commander 2 for just $11 (technically its $10.99 but what's one cent between friends?)

In related Steam news a number of previously announced games are now available on the service including the top-down shooter Alien Breed Impact, the first of four map packs for Defense Grid: The Awakening and a bunch of classic Sega Genesis titles that have been ported to the PC. Also a Greek myth themed action-RPG titled Numen: Contest of Heroes (previously released in Europe) has found its way to Steam with a 10 percent discount.

Update: There's a new Supreme Commander 2 patch that has been released via Steam with a number of bug fixes and improvements.

BioShock 2 and Supreme Commander 2 just $20 each at GameStop today

You may have only a few more hours to take advantage of this deal but it's definitely a good one. GameStop has a one day deal on a number of their boxed retail games on their web site. Two of them are high profile PC games. One is BioShock 2, the recent first person shooter from developer 2K Marin and publisher 2K Games. The other is Supreme Commander 2, the sci-fi RTS game from developer Gas Powered Games and publisher Square Enix.

From now until, we are guessing, the end of the day both PC versions of the titles can be purchased for $19.99 each, a 33 percent savings compared to their current retail price of $29.99 at GameStop.
