Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - March 10

Tomorrow PAX East 2011 begins and it might just be the single most attended US game event of the year. Who would have thought that just a couple of years ago?

Writer's Guild of America announces nominees for annual game writing award

The Writer's Guild of America has been offering an annual award for the past few years for "outstanding achievement in videogame writing." This year is no exception as the combined East and West versions of the guild (who also honor TV and movie writers) have offered up their nominees for the 2010 edition of the award.

Nominated this year are five games that either have or will come out for the PC: Fallout New Vegas, Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands and Singularity (God of War III was the other nominee). The winner will be announced on February 5 in ceremonies held in both Los Angeles and New York. You can check out the full list of nominees and the writers credited with the games after the jump:

Download: Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2 Patch 1.1

We just named it as the worst PC game of the year and now the first patch for Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2 has been released for PC owners of LucasArts' most recent action game. It doesn't look likely that the patch will change our minds as it looks like it only fixed a few minor bugs.

Among the bug fixes in this 1.1 patch (which updates both English and French language versions) are fixes for some texture issues in Radeon graphics cards, the cut scenes not working after 50 minutes of gameplay and some Stormtroopers becoming stuck in mid-air while using Force Push.

LucasArts lays off more workers

LucasArts has admitted that it has made a "minor adjustment in staffing" this week which of course is the code word for "layoffs". According to what unnamed sources have told Gamasutra as many as 50 people received their notices at the publisher this week. This new round follows a previous round of layoffs made just a couple of months ago.

LucasArts stated, "We remain committed to our internal studio – and to fostering relationships with trusted external partners – in order to deliver quality games that amaze and inspire fans." The publisher's most recent release was Star Wars The Force Unleashed II which came out last month. In February the company will publish Lego Star Wars III The Clone Wars. Recently LucasArts sold off most of the publishing rights to EA for the upcoming MMO Star Wars The Old Republic.

Rumor: Star Wars The Force Unleashed II DLC revealed? (Spoilers)

It didn't take long for someone to go and start hacking into the files of the PC port of Star Wars The Force Unleashed II. The action sequel from developer LucasArts may be getting some DLC content in the future thanks to the discovery of some interesting files in the PC version of the game.

NeoGaf has the details of what the DLC may (and we stress "may') have when it's released based on seeing the files in the hacked PC version. It's interesting stuff; so much so that we are putting a big spoiler warning before all of us get a chance to play it. In the meantime you can check out some revelations at the end of the jump.

This Week In PC Games: October 25-31

Katie bar the door! The last week of October is a witness to a flood of new PC games, most of which are downloadable only titles. In addition to the games listed below, the first official DLC for Civilization V is scheduled for release via Steam later this week.

Star Wars The Force Unleashed II - LucasArts is releasing the PC port of their action game sequel at the same time as the console versions this time out. Darth Vader's apprentice Starkiller is now out of his master's control as he uses his augmented Force powers to do a lot of damage.

Star Wars The Force Unleashed II PC system requirements announced

Star Wars The Force Unleashed II is released next week and unlike the first game in LucasArts' action game series the sequel will be released for the PC the same day as the console versions. The game's official Facebook page has now revealed the PC system requirements for the sequel.

The game is being ported to the PC by Aspyr Media and continues the story of Starkiller who was once Darth Vader's apprentice who has now rebelled against his former master. As with the first game, The Force Unleashed II is a single player only title. You can check out the PC system specs after the jump:

Force Unleashed commercials pit Vader against his apprentice

These trailers are so agonizingly short, but they show off some incredibly delicious CGI. Naturally, this is because they are not trailers, but television commercials for Force Unleashed 2. Each is incredibly short, as they have to be. The first, above, shows the apprentice fighting Vader and stormtroopers in a wintry climate. The one below shows the apprentice pushing Vader through several spaceship bulkheads. Short, sweet, and to the point, as a commercial should be. Vader looks especially awesome in these trailers, thanks to his ability to shrug off almost anything.

Force Unleashed 2 trailer fights against imperfect clones

Star Wars as a universe just really loves clones! First the clone troopers, then the stormtroopers, and now a Jedi. This trailer for Force Unleashed 2 shows off some of the new abilities and enemies you'll be fighting in the action-adventure title, as well as some interesting (and slightly disturbing) cinematics. Some of our favorite parts include a huge leap from a falling shuttle, the reflection of rockets onto the walker that fired them, and a huge, lumbering beast that bear vague resemblances to an ogre. This trailer does show off significantly more gameplay than any of the others we've seen, but it's still not to the point of a real gameplay trailer. Still, if you want stormtrooper throwing and cool force moves, you won't be disappointed.
