More Star Trek games are in the works

Star Trek Online's launch this time last month seems to have been a success, but many Trekkers might not want to pay a subscription fee for their chance to explore their favorite sci-fi franchise in game form. Fear not, however, because plans for other Star Trek games are in the works.

Trekmovie.com chatted with CBS Licensing VP of Product Development John Van Citters on future products based on Star Trek. While he was very complimentary on the launch of Star Trek Online, he stated that there are plans to launch other Trek based games. He said, "There are definitely things in the works. There is a great deal of interest in developing new games for Star Trek and we will definitely have more to say about it in the future."

Star Trek D-A-C now available for Mac download

The circle is now complete for Star Trek D-A-C. The arcade style space shooter based on the new movie revival of the sci-fi franchise is now available for purchase and download for the Mac platform via the Greentree web site. The game, originally developed by Naked Sky Entertainment, is a pretty cheap $9.99 purchase.

The Mac version was developed by Transgaming and contains all of the content that was contained in the PC port that was released last month via Steam. In addition to a single player campaign the title has multiplayer support for four different gameplay modes (Survival, Team Deathmatch, Conquest and Assault).

Star Trek D-A-C coming to the Mac in December

Usually Mac gamers get the shaft when it comes to getting native ports of previously released PC games. If they are released at all they usually are behind by months or even years after the PC versions are out. In the case of Star Trek D-A-C that's not the case at all as the Mac port of the movie-based game is now scheduled for release this December.

Transgaming is handling the Mac port duties for the game which was originally created by Naked Sky Entertainment. If you have a Macand have a hankering for some movie-based top down space shooting action, you can go ahead and pre-order the downloadable Star Trek D-A-C port for $8.99 at the GameTree online web site.

This Week In PC Games: November 9-15

This week's new PC game release includes the PC version of one of the most anticipated game titles of 2009. We also get a downloadable movie tie-in game and an RTS title that finally shows up in the US after its 2008 release in Europe:

Modern Warfare 2: Developer Infinity Ward releases the next game in their first person shooter series as they de-emphasize the "Call of Duty" in the title. The global hopping single player game deals once again with high stakes terrorists and is complimented by the Special Ops co-op levels and their multiplayer modes. Many PC players have expressed their dismay over Infinity Ward's decision to do away with dedicated servers for the game.

Steam offers pre-order savings on upcoming games

There's a bunch of upcoming downloadable only games on Steam that will be released in the next couple of weeks and a couple of them have some pre-order discounts to give recession battered folks like ourselves a bit of a break. The upcoming release of Croteam's FPS remake Serious Sam HD (no release date yet) can be bought for $17.99 right now, a 10 percent cut from its normal $19.99 price. Serious SamHD will also include Steam leaderboards and achievements.

Another 10 percent discount awaits people who want to purchase Star Trek D-A-C ahead of time via Steam. The movie-based top down space shooter is being sold for just $8.99 ahead of its November 12 release date.

Star Trek D-A-C's PC release moved up to November 12

A few days ago we reported that the PC version of Star Trek D-A-C would finally be released via Steam on November 17, the same day as the DVD and Blu-Ray release of the Star Trek movie revival. Well, it looks like gamers will get their Trek gaming goodness a few days earlier than planned. The Steam pre-order page has changed the release date. It's now showing a November 12 date for the game to be made available for download.

Pricing for the PC port has still not been revealed on the Steam web site. The top down space shooter from developer Naked Sky Entertainment is scheduled to have a number of extras not available in the first Xbox 360 version.

Fans of last May's terrific Star Trek movie revival will be able to buy the DVD and Blu-Ray versions of the film on November 17. Today, Steam revealed that happens to be the date for the PC port of Star Trek D-A-C, the top down space shooter that's based on the Trek universe depicted in the film (the upcoming MMO Star Trek Online is based on the "classic" Trek timeline but set several decades in its future).

As we have reported before the game was eveloped by Naked Sky Entertainment. The PC version will add two new ship classes, a new Assault mode map and a new Survival game mode. Pricing for the PC version has still not been announced.

Feature: A look back (and forward) at PC Star Trek games

For a while in the late 1990s and the early 2000s, you couldn't throw a stick without hitting a new Star Trek PC game. It's hard to believe now, but just a few years ago there were all kinds of games based on Gene Roddenberry's creation spanning all five TV shows and all 10 films. First-person shooters, tactical space combat games, RTS titles (both land and space-based), adventure game titles and more were all available. Unfortunately nearly all of the games are discontinued, perhaps because the publishers of said games no longer have the rights to Star Trek.

Things have settled down since the rush of Trek games, but with the release of the new Star Trek reboot feature film on Thursday night there's a renewed interest in the sci-fi franchise. So, we decided to engage in our own version of time travel by looking back at some of the Trek PC games and toward the future at two upcoming games, including the highly anticipated MMO game Star Trek Online.
