Rumor: Split/Second for PC to bypass retail stores? [Update: Not True]

There are always a lot of racing games but the one we are most excited to play this year is Split/Second. The game, which combines Burnout-style driving with lots of property damage and destruction is due for release for the PC and other platforms on May 18. However it looks like the PC port could be bypassing retail stores.

According to That Video Game Blog, a rep for the game's publisher Disney Interactive told them that the PC port of Split/Second will be a "limited online release." That suggests either game will be sold in box form only via a web site or that the game will have no boxed copy at all and will be sold via digital download only on services like Steam and Direct2Drive. We have emailed Disney Interactive to get some clarification on the game's PC release plans.

Update: Big Download just heard directly from Disney Interactive's PR rep for Split/Second. In a nutshell, the rumor is not true. He tell us, "The game will be available for PC at retail outlets. We also plan to release the game via digital distribution but have not announced details yet. It is not planned to be a limited release."

Split/Second gets May 18 release date; European version gets sub-title

There are not too many PC games slated for a May release but one of the is Split/Second. Today Disney Interactive announced that the driving action game that has racers trying to escape from lots of exploding stuff is set for a release for the PC and other platforms on May 18 in the US.

The Europeans get the game a few days later on May 21. For some reason the European version of the game's title has a subtitle added to it. MCV reports that the subtitle turns the game into Split/Second: Velocity. However the PC US box cover, as you can see to the right of this post, has no such subtitle. We also got some new screenshots of the game (lots of stuff blowing up) that we have added to our gallery.

Feature: Countdown to E3 2009 - The Other Games We Want To See

For the past couple of weeks we have been giving out our wish lists of games that we would like to see at E3 2009 next week. We have gone over the FPS titles, the action games and the RPG-MMO titles. Today we conclude our pre-E3 2009 feature with a list of other PC games titles we would like to check out including a couple that were revealed after we started our series.

But that's not all we have planned. Tune back in tomorrow for yet another special pre-E3 feature that we think you will like a lot.

First Split/Second screenshots cut to the chase

Disney Interactive wants to expand to create games that are not just for kids. In 2008 they released the "M" rated shooter Turok and the off-road racing game Pure. Earlier this month they announced their plans for Split/Second, an arcade racing game that's very much in the style of the first Burnout games.

This week the first in-game screenshots of Split/Second were released, showing off the gameplay we can expect from this Black Rock Studios developed title. Basically you are racing in a near-future TV show where the drivers not only push the accelerator down but also can trigger events like the above explosion to knock out other cars. The game is currently scheduled for a early 2010 release date.

Split/Second officially announced

It was revealed in the latest GameTrailers.TV episode but today Disney Interactive officially announced their plans for Split/Second (that's how they are handling the title) the new arcade racing game from developer Black Rock Studio. The game will be released for the PC and other platforms in early 2010.

As we speculated when Gametrailers.TV showed the teaser trailer, the game lets you race and collide with other cars and lets the drivers trigger environmental events and traps that can also take out their opponents and create new paths to take in the race. The race itself is being filmed for a "hyper-competitive reality television show". The big question: Can Split/Second compete with the speed and destruction of Criterion's Burnout series?
