Mid-week PC game sales put some skip in your step

It's just Tuesday but the folks at Impulse and Steam have some nice mid-week sales for anyone with a few dollars in their pocket. Over at Steam, the week-long Sega game sale continues with one-day price cuts for Stormrise ($7.50), Space Siege and Universe at War: Earth Assault ($5 for each). And of course the big Sega bundle is still on sale for $89.99 until Monday.

Over at Impulse they have put a number of games on sale this mid week. Ironclad's space strategy title Sins of a Solar Empire is now just $9.99 for a limited time while Gas Powered Games's strategy title Demigod is also $9.99 for a limited time.

Get free copy of Space Siege with Steam Alpha Protocol pre-order

We've been waiting patiently for Alpha Protocol but it looks like Obsidian Entertainment's long awaited super spy RPG is set for an early June release from publisher Sega. With two months to go before it's release, the Steam download service is offering a free game if you put your money down early for Alpha Protocol.

Specifically, the game you will be getting for free is Space Siege, the sci-fi action-RPG from developer Gas Powered Games that was released back in 2008. That's a whopping $19.99 game you are getting for nothing. If you pre-order Alpha Protocol but already own Space Siege you can give your Steam code for the game to a buddy.

Gas Powered Games to announce "next big thing" on Feb. 15

With Supreme Commander 2 due for release in less than a month, developer Gas Powered Games is apparetly wasting no time in letting folks know about their next project. VG247.com has revealed that Gas Powered's head man Chris Taylor used his personal Facebook page to declare, "Another busy day, can't wait to announce our next big thing on the 15th... I hate keeping secrets."

So let the speculation begin? Could we see a new game in the Dungeon Siege series?
Perhaps we will hear about Demigod 2? Maybe something totally new. It's not likely to be a sequel to Space Siege which is considered to be the developer's one failure of a game, at least in terms of sales.

Steam's latest one day sale has super low prices

Yep, it's time for yet another Steam sales post. Their ongoing holiday sale still has six days to go but today their one-day sale has some super low prices on five games. In fact all but one of them are priced below $10 each. The one exception is The Orange Box. Valve's collection of all the current Half-Life 2 games plus Team Fortress 2 and Portal is now just $14.99.

The other games on sale for the next 23 hours are Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box for $7.49, Killing Floor and Space Siege for $4.99 each and Prey for a mere $2.25.

Space Siege is free with Alpha Protocol Steam pre-order

Alpha Protocol is one of Sega's big fall/holiday 2009 titles and the modern day super spy action-RPG from developer Obsidian Entertainment should be something to look forward to. Now folks who download and buy their games via Valve's Steam service have an even nicer deal to look forward to.

If you put your money down for Alpha Protocol before the game is released in October on Steam you can download and play the Sega-published 2008 sci-fi action-RPG Space Siege right now. The title, from developer Gas Powered Games, normally costs $19.99 via Steam so this is an unusually nice free game deal from the service.

Even more downloadable PC game sales this weekend

If you want to save some money this weekend while also buying some PC game titles, we have already provided a number of choices. But there are even more to consider. For example, Stardock's Impulse web site has put a number of games from publisher Enlight on sale. Restaurant Empire, Nemesis of the Roman Empire, Warlords Battlecry III and Capitalism II are all on sale via Impulse for $9.99 each.

IGN's Direct2Drive has also put one of its many games on sale. Gas Powered Games' last release, the action-RPG Space Siege, can be downloaded and purchased for $9.99, a 50 percent cut from its normal price, for this weekend.

Feature: 10 games that didn't rise above the hype

The folks who write about games for a living can be very guilty at times for hyping a game before its release. Sometimes theymake it sound like it's a done deal that it will be the greatest game ever made when it come out.. Heck, some folks even give out awards at E3 for games that are not even completed or just shown in trailer form. So you have to expect that on occasion a game comes out that, for whatever reason, doesn't quite live up to all of its promise, previews and PR.

In the past decade there have been many such PC games like we have described. These are titles that are not bad per se (that would be Daikatana) but just didn't have what it took to live up to the expecations that gamers and especially game journalists had for it. Big Download decided to pick 10 such games from the past 10 years that, for one reason or another, had high hopes but just couldn't cut it.

Feature: Lumps of Coal 08

Santa Claus may be jolly, but he's also nosy and quite vengeful. He makes a list then checks it twice, and definitely spies on you to determine whether you've been naughty or nice. If you've been a pest in 2008, do all the good deeds you can before Christmas to avoid seeing any of these under your tree come December 25.

Gas Powered's Chris Taylor wants more press attention to developers

Gas Powered Games' founder Chris Taylor is certainly one of the bigger names in the PC game industry thanks to his work on notable titles as Total Annihilation, Dungeon Siege and Supreme Commander. His company just released Space Siege for publisher Sega and they are now working on the strategy title Demigod for Stardock. As a result, Taylor gets lots of requests for interviews from the gaming press.

However, Taylor in (ironically) an interview with Gamasutra, states he would rather have team members from Demigod answer the press' questions about specific features. Taylor states, "I have been very spoiled, and get more attention than I deserve. So I like to see the team interacting more with the press, and see questions go from the press straight to the guys who create the AI, or [lead artist] Nate [Simpson], who's created this incredible look for the world, or Mike [Marr], who's now the lead designer on the game."
