February 2010 PC game retail sales sees Sims 3 and Star Trek Online on top

As has been shown in recent surveys, PC gaming is still moving more into digital downloads than games being sold in boxes in retail stores. However the NPD Group still looks at PC games sold in brick-and-mortar locations and they have now released the top 20 PC games sold in the US in retail stores.

The top four places belong to The Sims 3 and Star Trek Online. In fact the small expansion pack for The Sims 3, High-End Loft Stuff, was the number one best selling PC game last month. Star Trek Online took over the number two and number four (for the Collector's Edition) spots, with the main Sims 3 game in at number three.

It's interesting to compare this list with, say, the Steam weekly top 10 list. There's no Sims 3 game listed on Steam's best selling game list while Modern Warfare 2, ranked in the top five on Steam's list for some time, only comes in at number 11 on NPD's list.

Pixe Lott sings 'Mama Do' in Simlish

A long while back, we were treated to Katy Perry singing one of her hit songs in Simlish. Now it's pop singer Pixie Lott's turn to give one of her hits the Simlish treatment. This video takes a behind-the-scenes look at the recording of 'Mama Do' in Simlish for an upcoming Sims 3 music video, and she gets a crash course in learning a virtual foreign language. She should have tried Rosetta Stone.

Review: The Sims 3

The Sims is one of the best-selling game series in history, and the best-selling PC franchise, with over 100 million units shipped worldwide for the games and expansions. Both the first and second entries in the franchise have exceeded sales records months and even years after their original releases. Now, Electronic Arts has revisited the franchise again with Sims 3, five years after the release of the last numbered title. Thanks to the incredible success of the previous games, it would have been easy to simply reiterate the gameplay into a new engine and call it at that. But Sims 3 does not rest on the laurels of its predecessors, and improves The Sims in ways that make the first two games look dated and obtuse. It is an excellent entry into the series, and will undoubtedly serve as a benchmark for accessible, entertaining simulation games for a long time to come.

Feature: Big Download's 10 most anticipated spring quarter 2009 games

Ah, spring. It's the season for renewal where trees grow back their leaves, grass pops back up out of the ground and there's a general sense of optimism in the air (except for Cubs fans, but that's a completely different story). Oddly enough in past years the PC game industry has used the spring quarter (April-June) to take something of a break. In 2008 only one major PC game, Age of Conan, was released during the spring quarter.

That's not the case for the 2009 spring season, however. There are quite a few major titles coming out for our platform in the next three months. So much so, in fact, that we were actually able to pick 10 games that we are most looking forward to playing. And believe it or not it was a hard list to decide on; we left out quite a few games that also look promising but in our view didn't look quite as good as the 10 games on this list. As always keep in mind that release dates for games can, and ususally do, change so it's very possible that one or more of these titles may not make their spring release dates.

The Sims 3 video toys with life

This narrated video for The Sims 3 discusses some of the in-depth features the game will have in creating different Sim characters. In addition to customizing the look and physical characteristics of each sim, players will be able to put in specific personality traits that will define how your sim interacts with the world. Best of all, sims will be able to take care of their own basic needs, leaving players free to take care of other game aspects. Players can even earn an object called a Steel Bladder, so that their sims will never need the bathroom again.
