Mass Effect 2 DLC trailer heralds the Reaper invasion

Mass Effect 3 is Bioware's next highly anticipated game, and their latest DLC offering is bridging the gap between Mass Effect 2 and its upcoming sequel. Put into a situation where he must stop a Reaper attack on a Mass Relay, Shepard apparently must rescue somebody from a prison, fight off corporate thugs and Collectors alike, and do all the things we expect of him. In short, it's pretty much a standard BioWare DLC trailer. Lots of style, a teensy bit of gameplay, and a hook to make you want to buy the add-on.

Review: Monday Night Combat

Team Fortress 2 has been the undisputed champion of team-based, competitive multiplayer chooters. With characteristic classes, high-octane gameplay, and continued support from the developers, it's no wonder that TF2 has gone on to become one of the biggest games on the PC. However, they certainly don't have a monopoly on this sort of creativity, and upstart Uber Entertainment has managed to deliver an incredible freshman game that is on par with, if not better than, TF2. Monday Night Combat is a polished masterpiece, and despite a few nagging issues, it remains the best multiplayer shooters we have played in almost four years.

Monday Night Combat trailer crosses over with more franchises

Monday Night Combat is one of the better multiplayer shooters out there, and it's finally left beta on the PC. To commemorate the occasion, the developers at Uber Entertainment have released a launch trailer that shows off almost every aspect of gameplay. In addition, they have also crossed over with two other incredibly popular franchises: Team Fortress 2 and Penny Arcade. This trailer shows off the different additions to both MNC and TF2, as well as the new Penny Arcade bot. Let's just leave it that it's mildly not safe for work.

Mass Effect 3 trailer fights back against the Reapers

The biggest threat to face the Mass Effect universe is that of the Reapers. Merciless, emotionless biomechanoids, they exist only to harvest more sentient life to propagate their species. While there are no real concrete details for Mass Effect 3 yet, one of the obvious major plot points is the return of the Reapers. This trailer explores what this means, especially for the people of a battered and bruised Earth. While a British soldier is helping out all he can, Shepard is mysteriously absent from the fight, and it looks as if Earth will fall. All in all, it's a slick cinematic trailer, just as we expect for the initial reveal.

Genesis AD trailer showcases three player classes

Genesis AD is the latest free-to-play game from Ijji, and it's aiming for an open beta come November. Alongside this news also comes a new trailer which shows off three of the classes in the game. They are, in order of appearance, the assault, sniper, and supplier. The assault seems to use shotguns and focuses on up-front kills, the supplier seems to be a more mid-range, mobility-oriented character, and the sniper seems to be the sneaky, kill you without you knowing type. In other words, standard team-based fare for a shooter. What we're wondering is where we can get awesome jump packs like those, because they blow our minds.

Freeware Friday: Subvein

Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!

Grand Theft Auto 2 is one of our favorite games. We've covered it here before on Freeware Friday (thanks to those generous folk at Rockstar) but we really can't emphasize enough just how fun it is. It seems we're not the only ones who seriously adore it, however, as an excellent multiplayer game bearing a striking resemblance to GTA2 was released recently. Subvein takes the top-down gameplay of the early Grand Theft Auto games, sticks it in a purely multiplayer environment, and sets it free. The result is a thoroughly enjoyable multiplayer experience that should be overlooked by absolutely nobody. If you enjoy multiplayer games whatsoever, you owe it to yourself to download and play Subvein.

Kane and Lynch 2 trailer robs some banks

Kane and Lynch may have been poorly received, but that didn't prevent the second game from releasing. While it's hardly the most popular game in the world - thanks in part to its supposed role in the firing of Jeff Gerstmann - Kane and Lynch had some interesting multiplayer. The return of the psychotic duo in Kane and Lynch 2 also means the return of the multiplayer shenanigans, and in case you are on the fence about it, here's a trailer straight from the developers about what you can expect. Well, it's a cutscene and doesn't actually show any gameplay footage, but it might spark your interest a little. The most curious thing is the person's presence with the robbers. Is it a documentary director? a robber? A random civilian? There are cases for all three.

Review: All Points Bulletin

In one sense, it's almost impossible to review an MMO. A game based around keeping the player addicted and in the game for a long as possible doesn't exactly fit the rigid, defined experience of classic games. On the other hand, there are games like APB, which try to break the MMO formula by tossing in those traditional gaming elements. In doing so, they open the gates to being judged in a shorter period of time than games like Aion or Warhammer Online. Contrary to what might be said by the developers, you will know if you like APB within the first hour or not, and it isn't that different or difficult to judge.

*Note: This review does not take into account the business model, as it is our firm belief that the current business model has nothing to do with the enjoyment of the game.

Spec Ops trailer blows away Dubai

Helicopters crashing into buildings. Blind fire from behind cover. Destruction of a once bustling metropolis. Things are looking relatively average in this Spec Ops: The Line trailer, which doesn't exactly impress with its usage of stereotyped shooter genre conventions. Still, this is the first Spec Ops game in seven years, so we're willing to cut it a little slack. It's a series that has been long absent, after all.

Boot Disk: Clive Barker's Undying

Sometimes you just need to sit down, slide a floppy into your A: drive, and enjoy gaming retro style. We know this all too well! That's why we have a list of the best and brightest from days long gone. These are some of our favorite games of all time, and we're sure that you'll love them as much as we do, if not more. Welcome to Boot Disk, and enjoy the retro ride!

The horror shooter genre is a relatively tame one. The terror that comes from such games is derived more from cheap startles than genuine psychological horror. Doom 3 is the pinnacle of these kinds of games, with many people simply labeling it as a startle game, not a horror game. However, a few years before Doom 3, Clive Barker tried his hand at suffusing games with his particular brand of horror. The result was Undying, and while not too scary, it was still more disturbing and affecting than most horror shooters today. This, combined with the fact that it was released in 2001, just goes to show that sometimes a genre just doesn't evolve.
