Serious Sam HD: Second Encounter Fusion DLC announced; will add First Encounter content

The "HD" graphical remakes of the first person shooters Serious Sam: The First Encounter and Serious Sam The Second Encounter have been big sales hits for developer Croteam and its publisher Devolver Digital. Now the two games will soon become one thanks to the announcement of the Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter Fusion DLC pack.

Fan site Seriously! has the first word on the DLC pack which will add all 15 campaign levels and all seven Versus levels of Serious Sam HD The First Encounter into Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter. Those maps will also have support for The Second Encounter's new gameplay modes. Pricing for the Fusion DLC pack will be $9.99 but if you already own Serious Sam HD The First Encounter you can download the DLC pack for free. There's no word yet on when the DLC will be released but the article hints that if the packs sells well more DLC content may be offered.

Serious Sam 3 hints via Twitter; full reveal "soon"

After playing and enjoying the graphical remakes of Serious Sam: The First Encounter and The Second Encounter, we have been waiting patiently for developer Croteam to make good on its promise on Serious Sam 3, the next all new game in the first person shooter series.

Devolver Digital, who published the "HD" Serious Sam remakes for the PC, is now hinting that our wait for more info on Serious Sam 3 is closed to being satisfied. In a post on its Twitter page this week it stated, "So enough of the teasing, we'll start giving some behind the scenes looks at Croteam's Serious Sam 3 development starting soon! Stay tuned." In an earlier "tweet" the page stated, "CONFIRMED: the new and redesigned enemies of Serious Sam 3 will give you a boner and heart attack at the same time."

There's also word via the Twitter page that the release of the editor for Serious Engine 3 (used by the HD Serious Sam games as well as Serious Sam 3) will be coming soon along with contests for the best user generated maps.

Serious Sam HD Gold Edition coming Thursday on Steam

If you have never tried the Serious Sam series of first person shooters from developer Croteam, Thursday may be the day to finally give in. Fan site Seriously received word from publisher Devolver Digital that a new Serious Sam HD Gold Edition will be released via Steam on Thursday.

The four game collection will have both the original 2001 versions of Serious Sam: The First Encounter and Serious Sam: The Second Encounter along with the new "HD" graphical updates of both games. The total price for the collection will by $39.99. Croteam is still supposedly working on an all new Serious Sam game but there's been no real update on that game's status in a while.

GoG.com adds original Serious Sam: The Second Encounter to library

As promised a few weeks ago, the DRM-free download site GoG.com now has the exclusive rights to release the original version of Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. The 2002 released follow-up to developer Croteam's first person shooter is now available to purchase and download from GoG.com for just $9.99. That price also includes the game's soundtrack.

This is the original version of the game with the first edition version of Croteam's Serious Engine behind it. Earlier this year Croteam and publisher Devolver Digital released Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, a graphically improved version of the game using Serious Engine 3. Currently Croteam is working on the next game in the series, Serious Sam 3, which will also use Serious Engine 3.

GoG.com offers the original Serious Sam: The First Encounter for sale again

When developer Croteam released a graphical upgrade for its first person shooter Serious Sam: The First Encounter late in 2009, the original version of the game was no longer for sale on various game download sites. Until today, that is. The DRM-free web site GoG.com has announced that the original, HD-less, version of the game is now available for download and purchase from its service via an agreement with Croteam's publishers Devolver Digital.

First released in 2001 by the original Gathering of Developers, Croteam's debut shooter was also the first game to use the developer's Serious Engine which allowed for huge outdoor levels and tons of enemies on screen in full 3D. You can get the game from GoG.com now (plus a free game soundtrack download) for $9.99.

Boot Disk: Serious Sam: The First Encounter

Sometimes you just need to sit down, slide a floppy into your A: drive, and enjoy gaming retro style. We know this all too well! That's why we have a list of the best and brightest from days long gone. These are some of our favorite games of all time, and we're sure that you'll love them as much as we do, if not more. Welcome to Boot Disk, and enjoy the retro ride!

First person shooters have been evolving throughout the years. Doom bears little resemblance to the modern first-person shooter, except maybe in the dark and gritty nature of its visuals. Even then it's not that similar. The arcade gameplay of years ago has been moved to the side in favor of expansive storylines and heavily scripted scenes. While this is entertaining, sometimes people just want to hop into a game and blow some baddies away with little thought. Since the Doom and Quake franchises have been moving away from their roots, it's up to other developers to pick up the slack, and CroTeam took the challenge. Their first massively successful game, Serious Sam: The First Encounter, blew gamers away with its focus on simple and endearing fun. While they have since remade the game in HD, the original is still worth a look. After all, it can run on practically any system now!

Croteam: Serious Sam 3 coming in 2010

Lots of folks have been enjoying the recent graphical remake Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter and in early 2010 we can expect to see The Second Encounter receive the same treatment. But what about an all new game with Sam "Serious" Stone? We've already reported that Serious Sam 3 is in production at developer Croteam and will likely dump the cartoony art style of the previous games.

So when can we expect to see the all new adventures begin? Destructoid chatted with Croteam's Roman Ribaric who told them, "It is currently planned to be finished in 2010." We can certainly put that in our list of games we are looking forward to in the next year.
