New Serious Sam 3 screenshots come out of the sand

So is it sacrilege to say that of all the first person shooters either already out or due to be out in 2011, Serious Sam 3 is the one we want to play the most? Maybe but if it is we don't care. Croteam's next game in the series already looks like our new Saturday night thing.

Some new screenshots have popped up on the internet and we have added them to our ever increasing gallery. The one that has us most intrigued is the above shot which shows what looks like a sand whale coming out of the, well, sand. Something tells us that it will take more than a pistol shot or two to take out this thing. We will find out more when the game is released later this year.

Serious Sam Indie Series to bring three indie-made games to Serious Sam franchise

Serious Sam 3 may be being made by Croteam but that's not the only game that will feature the exploits of Sam "Serious" Stone this year. Our sister site Joystiq reports that publisher Devolver Digital will release three smaller Serious Sam-based games made by indie developers under the umbrella name of the Serious Sam Indie Series.

One is Serious Sam: The Random Encounter which will be a turn-based RPG developed by Super Crate Box developer Vlambeer. Another is Serious Sam: Double D (get your mind out of the gutter) a side-scroller shooter with hand drawn artwork from developer Mommy's Best Games. Finally mobile platforms will get to play Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack! It's a hand-drawn auto-runner game from developer Be-Rad Entertainment. Serious Sam: Double D and Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack will be playable at Devolver Digital's booth at PAX East 2011 this weekend. All three games will be released "in the coming months" leading up to Serious Sam 3's release this summer.

Serious Sam 3 gives up more details and screenshots

Serious Sam 3: BFE (nope, still know idea what BFE means) is on its way to being released sometime this summer. Today developer Croteam sent over a few more screenshots and Rock Paper Shotgun has the first concrete details of what to expect from the next installment of the first person shooter series.

The game itself is actually a prequel to the previous games in the series as Mental's various armies attack 22nd century Egypt. It's up to Sam "Serious" Stone to make things right. The Headless Kamikaze and other enemies from the first games are back along with new foes like the Scrapjack (shown above). And yes, there will again be support for up to 16 players in co-op campaign play along with Deathmatch and more multiplayer modes.

First Serious Sam 3 screenshot sneaks out of Facebook

Serious Sam 3 has been a bit of a mystery in terms of what the upcoming next game in Croteam's first person shooter series will look like. Now the official Serious Sam Facebook page has given everyone a chance to check out the first official screenshot from Serious Sam 3: BFE (we still don't know what "BFE" means).

The screenshot supposedly shows a "Scrapjack" in what looks like is a Middle Eastern village from the signage. Something tells us there might be some parodys of the Call of Duty games in this new installment. We've been told to expect more screenshots tomorrow.

Devolver Digital to showcase "secret indie titles" at PAX East

Devolver Digital is mostly known as the publisher who handled the release of the graphical remakes of the first two Serious Sam games for developer Croteam. However the Austin, Texas-based company is apparently going to be expanding their horizons to other game titles very soon.

A post on the company's Twitter page states, "We'll be at PAX East showing off some secret indie titles that will melt faces. Come and find us!." PAX East 2011 is, of course, the big public game event that's being held in Boston on March 11-13. Big Download emailed Devolver's head man Mike Wilson who told us, "I can confirm we'll be there, but the secret indies are indeed... Secret. :) For now, anyway."

Serious Sam 3 due in summer of 2011, says Croteam CEO

Serious Sam 3 has had a rather nebulous release date time frame for a while but today the official web site of the first person shooter's developer Croteam had a short but sweet statement from its CEO Roman Ribaric: "Just a quick note to let all Serious Sam fans know that Serious Sam 3: BFE is coming this summer 2011. Official annoncement (sic) will be released soon."

Croteam's been busy over the past year developing and releasing graphical remakes of its first two Serious Sam games with its new in-house Serious Engine 3 tech with partner Devolver Digital. Our question: What does "BFE" mean in the game's title?

Interview: We chat with Croteam's co-founder about Serious Sam 3

The past year or so have seen developer Croteam come back into gamers' minds with the release of the graphically enhanced versions of the team's first two Serious Sam first person shooter games. The games, which used Croteam's third major version of its own in-house Serious Engine technology, are currently on sale for 90 percent off today only on Steam (and 75 percent off the rest of the week).

But Croteam, along with its publishing partner Devolver Digital, isn't just remaking its older games. It's also working hard on its long awaited next game in the series, Serious Sam 3, Big Download got Croteam co-founder Alen Ladavac to give us a little more info on what they have planned for "Serious" Sam Stone in his next adventure.

Serious Engine 3 beta tools released on Steam

Mod makers who have been waiting to get official mod tools for the revamped versions of the Serious Sam first person shooters can get started now. Today publisher Devolver Digital announced that the beta release of the mod tools for Serious Engine 3 are now available to download for free via Steam for all owners of Serious Sam HD The Second Encounter.

The tools will allow mod makers to create new single, co-op and multiplayer maps for the first person shooter created by Croteam. The development team will be checking out the creations made by third parties and may even offer one multiplayer map creator a chance to have his or her map included in the upcoming Serious Sam 3 which also uses Serious Engine 3.

GoG.com adds original Serious Sam: The Second Encounter to library

As promised a few weeks ago, the DRM-free download site GoG.com now has the exclusive rights to release the original version of Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. The 2002 released follow-up to developer Croteam's first person shooter is now available to purchase and download from GoG.com for just $9.99. That price also includes the game's soundtrack.

This is the original version of the game with the first edition version of Croteam's Serious Engine behind it. Earlier this year Croteam and publisher Devolver Digital released Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, a graphically improved version of the game using Serious Engine 3. Currently Croteam is working on the next game in the series, Serious Sam 3, which will also use Serious Engine 3.

Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter now due in late April

Big Download has learned that Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, the upcoming graphical remake of Croteam's second game in the first person shooter series, has been pushed back slightly. Originally scheduled for a first quarter 2010 release, Big Download has been told by the game's publisher Devolver Digital that the game is now due for release in late April.

As with Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, the remake of The Second Encounter will also be released via Steam for PC users and for the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Arcade (Majesco will still be the co-publisher of the Xbox 360 port). Devolver Digital also plans to release The Second Encounter remake in retail stores for the PC version around the same time.

Devolver Digital also said that the long awaited deathmatch and dedicated servers update for Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter should be released "soon" and that The Second Encounter will have deathmatch support out of the box along with all of the other fixes and additions that have been or will be released for The First Encounter.

Finally Devolver Digital will also publish Croteam's all new next game Serious Sam 3 but they are keeping details on that title a secret for now.
