Movie Review: Second Skin

The documentary film Second Skin, Directed by Juan Carlos Pineiro Escoriaza, examines the different aspects of the MMORPG's (Massively Multiplayer Role-Playing Games) phenomenal popularity, the culture that has grown around them and speaks to experts and developers about them. While the documentary has a tendency to fly in different directions in its attempt to cover every facet of gaming, it mainly focuses on three distinct stories. The first centers on a group of friends in Fort Wayne, Indiana who are dedicated World of Warcraft players; the second includes a budding romance between two EverQuest 2 players; and the last involves a man who hits rock bottom with his MMO addiction.

Documentary on MMOs released online and in theaters

It's a rare thing indeed to have a documentary on gaming shown in theaters. Yet that's exactly what's happening with Second Skin, a newly released movie that chronicles the lifes of a select few gamers that play in MMO titles like World of Warcraft and Everquest.

The movie, from production studio Pure West, is taking a very Web 2.0 attitude in terms of its release. While you can go pay money and watch the film inside a theater in select cities (and as David Letterman always says, we hope to goodness your city has been selected) you can also watch the theatrical version for free via sites like Hulu and others. Even if you watch the free version you might want to check out the upcoming DVD release on August 25 which will include even more content than the original film. in any case if you are at all interested in the culture behind MMO players its definately worth a look; at least in its free online version.
