S2 Games sneaks out info on upcoming game Heroes of Newerth

Usually when a game is ready to be revealed, the publisher or developer like to make a big splash with a press release, screenshots, videos and the like. However the folks at S2 Games, best known for their Savage series of RTS-FPS hybrid games, are taking a different viral approach to reveal their next game project Heroes of Newerth.

Basically the team sent no emails to the media and made no phone calls via a PR rep but rather let their die hard Savage fans get the first jump on the game announcement and let things kind of spiral out from there. In fact there's very little public info on Heroes of Newerth other than it seems to be a fantasy RTS game that fans of the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients might want to look into. The company is giving out beta keys to select folks and we hope to contact S2 Games to gets some of our own to give to our readers. In the meantime you can check out a very brief gameplay video after the jump.

Savage 2 get new major patch

Last December, developer S2 Games made the decision to make their RTS-FPS hybrid game Savage 2 completely free to play (although with a paid premium tier as well). This week, S2 Games has released a new patch (via their auto-updater) that adds and revamps a number of features.

The patch overhauls the game's VOIP features, makes some changes to the game's user interface, adds some balance changes and adds three new maps to the game. It also makes a few cosmetic changes to the game's existing maps. Folks who get Savage 2 via Steam can also get the new update via that service. Freeware Friday: Savage 2: A Tortured Soul

Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!

It's interesting that I'd talk about Savage 2: A Tortured Soul. Not because it just recently went mostly-free (if you donate, you still get bonuses), but rather because I talked about another action-strategy hybrid recently with Tremulous. However, taking a look at the two games, they couldn't be more different. Where Tremulous is all about getting into the thick of the action, Savage is more strategic and thoughtful. To each their own, after all! However, if you like one, you will probably like the other. So let's delve into this recent gem.

Savage 2 goes free

Well that's interesting timing. Today, just as we posted up our feature on a number of current and upcoming free-to-play FPS titles comes word that one more game has joined its ranks. S2 Games has announced that their multiplayer fantasy FPS-RTS hybrid game Savage 2 has been turned into a free game. That means when you download the client (available here at Big Download) there are no longer any demo restrictions; you can play the full game online and via LAN.

Of course S2 Games isn't totally giving up on getting some money off of Savage 2. For $9.99 you can upgrade the game to a Premium account which gives you, among other things, more inventory slots than free players, lifetime stats, game replay features and more.

Savage 2 gets permanent price cut to $19.99; new patch later today

It looks like S2 Games' sale of their multiplayer FPS-RTS game Savage 2 via Steam was even more successful than first thought. The game was sold last weekend for just $9.99 via Steam and caused a surge of interest in the title, so much so that S2 Games had to put up more game servers to meet up with the demand.

Now S2 Games has announced that Savage 2 will get a permanent price cut to $19.99, $10 off its price, via Steam. The regular downloadable game will get that price cut later today after the release of a new patch for Savage 2 that will have "numerous balance improvements as well as some other fixes and additions." The patch will be handled via the game's auto-updater.

Savage 2 to get more official servers

Looks like Battlefield Heroes wasn't the only game to get a lot of online attention this past weekend. S2 Games, the creators of the multiplayer fantasy FPS-RPG Savage 2, had a big sale of their game via Steam this past weekend where people can buy the full game for just $9.99.

That apparently caused a lot more people to purchase the game and play it online. The game's official web site has a note that states, "Due to tremendous response we have more players than expected. We will be putting more official servers online this week to handle the popularity! Thanks everyone." If you want to try the game out before you purchase it you can download the free demo right here at Big Download.

Savage 2 to be next game on sale via Steam

Usually Valve announces which game or games it will have as a heavy discount for the weekend via Steam. However, developer S2 Games has beat Valve to the punch by announcing on their web site that starting sometime today and running through the weekend that the multiplayer fantasy FPS-RTS game Savage 2 will have its price reduced from $29.99 to just $9.99.

In addition to the Steam sale, S2 Games is supposed to release a patch for Savage 2 by the end of the week. The web site states the patch will have " . . .lots of improvements, balance, and optimizations. The K2 Engine will run better with additonal enhancements." So it seems like perfect timing for the Steam sale.

Savage 2 free play week begins

As promised, the folks at small developer S2 Games have launched a free play week for their multiplayer FPS-RTS game Savage 2. From now until July 27, anyone who downloads the free demo version of the game will find that it has been unlocked and that they can play the full version with no restrictions. You can download the demo right here at Big Download.

The official web site for the game has also revealed plans for a cash tournament with $6,500 in total cash prizes. The tournament is specifically for Savage 2 clans and will begin on September 13. Clan leaders are eligible for free Savage 2 accounts; details are again on the game's web site.

New Savage 2 update released; free play coming later this month

S2 Games continues to support their independently developed and released RTS-FPS hybrid game Savage 2. The game's official web site has posted up word on a new update that has been released for the title (via their own auto-updater) that fixes a number of bugs in the game along with some game balance changes

S2 Games apparently has plans in the near future to release another update that will bring Savage 2 some graphics engine improvements and optimizations. They have also announced plans for a free play week for the game for July 21-28. That means anyone who plays the free demo version will be able to play the full game with no restrictions for that week. You can download the demo right here at Big Download.
