Final Sam and Max Season 3 chapter due on Monday

It's been perhaps the best Sam and Max "season" since developer Telltale Games has revived the classic adventure game series. And now the fifth and final chapter of The Devil's Playhouse is close at hand. Telltale has announced that the finale, The City That Dare Not Sleep, will be released on Monday, August 30.

The final chapter sees Max turned into a monster who is attacking a city. After dealing with a ton of clones of himself, the crime fighting dog Sam dog has to now stop his rabbit partner from, well, causing more havoc than Max normally does. Remember, Telltale has just reduced the price of Season 3 down to just $19.95 which makes it easy to get all five episodes at once.

Sam and Max Season Three and Complete Collection on sale at Telltale

Fans of the Sam and Max episodic series have been awaiting word on when the final chapter for Season Three, The Devil's Playground, would be released. The blog site for the game's developer Telltale Games states that a release date for the final episode, The City That Dares Not Sleep, will be revealed "soon". You can see a screenshot from the final episode above this news post.

However if you have yet to purchase Season Three yet, now's a good time to do so as Telltale has lowered the price for all five episodes, including the unreleased fifth chapter, to just $19.95 via the developer's online store. In addition you can get Sam and Max: Complete Collection with all three seasons included for just $39.95.

Next Sam and Max episode (They Stole Max's Brain!) due June 22

While developer Telltale Games may be doing big time licensed games like Back to the Future and Jurassic Park in the near future they are still working on their tried and true titles. This week the developer announced that the third episode in the current "season" of Sam and Max: The Devil's Playground will be released on June 22.

This chapter is titled "They Stole Max's Brain!" and yes, Max's brain does indeed go missing so its up to Sam to find it. As you can see Sam is determined to find Max's brain, even if he has to shoot anyone and everyone to do it.

New Sam and Max screens show off old-timey adventures

Those waiting eagerly for the new Sam and Max episode to arrive will be glad to know that Telltale has release a bunch of new screenshots and artwork for the general public to consume. Only one is an actual screenshot, but some of the pictures include two new locations, a new character, and redesigns for Sam and Max to fit their style in older times. Our personal favorite is the new outfits for Sam and Max. They fit right in the 1920s, and seeing Max in a newsboy outfit is both endearing and hilarious at the same time. You can check out all of the new visuals in our gallery.

Review: Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse - The Penal Zone

The comedy crime fighting duo Sam & Max are back for their third season called "The Devil's Playhouse." Episode one is titled The Penal Zone, and if you think that's an obvious setup for a bit of juvenile humor, then you definitely understand what Sam & Max are all about. The humor is familiar, and many of the characters introduced previously make a return, but this is clearly a new and improved version of the Freelance Police. Not only are the graphics sharper than ever, the user interface has been modified with a notepad so players can keep up with the plot and get clues as where to go next. Small touches like these go a long way towards making the game feel more like a detective adventure. However, the most prominent addition is the ability to use Max and a number of different psychic powers.

Sam and Max The Penal Zone released; Team Fortress 2 adds Sam and Max items

As promised, this tax day brings us the The Penal Zone, the first episode of the third season of Telltale Games' Sam and Max adventure game series. Telltale has released the first episode for the PC and Mac on their web site. Please remember that at the moment the only way to get the episode is if you pay for the entire five chapter season up front for $34.95.

But that's not all. Valve has just updated their multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2 with a new patch via Steam. In addition to a few bug fixes the patch adds some new in-game TF2 items related to Sam and Max including weapons and hats. Enjoy.

Update: Valve has now said Team Fortress 2 items are for players who pre-ordered or buy Sam and Max in the first week of release. They include Sam and Max's weapons and the ability to wear Sam's severed head as a hat. Kinky

This Week In PC Games: April 12-18

This week's only retail game release is an expansion of a open world action game released in 2008. In addition there are a few games set for digital download exclusive releases:

Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City: Developer Rockstar North released the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV in December 2008. Now the developer releases this PC version of their two Xbox 360 downloadable expansions as a stand alone game to stores this week. It includes The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, each of which adds a new storyline and content to the acclaimed open world action game.

GDC 2010: Sam and Max Season 3 launches April 15 for PC and Mac

It's been two years since Telltale Games' second "season" of Sam and Max game episodes but in about a month the wait will be over. IGN, reporting from GDC, states that the first epsiode of the third season will be available for download on April 15 for both the PC and the Mac. It's the first time that any Telltale episodic series will launch for both PC and Mac platforms at the same time (oh, it's also coming to the Playstation Network too).

There will be five episodes for this season, which apparently has the overall subtitle The Devil's Playhouse. Telltale will let folks pre-order the full season for $34.95 but it looks like they won't be selling individual episodes yet. Anyone who does pre-order will get some special stuff such as a free episode from any of Telltale's previous games, access to a special preview section, a private forum with chats with Telltale's team and Sam and Max creator Steve Purcell and more.
