Batman Arkham City won't have multiplayer features

Batman Arkham City is the upcoming sequel to 2009's terrific single player-only super hero action game Batman Arkham Asylum. Many thought that the sequel from developer Rocksteady would have some kind of multiplayer mode. However IGN has the word that there will be no multiplayer in Batman Arkham City.

Chatting with IGN, the game's director Sefton Hill confirmed the news, saying, "Our thought process behind this was fairly simple: when we investigated adding multiplayer we asked, 'If we use all of the energy that is required to create multiplayer and instead focus this on the single player, would that deliver a better overall game?'" Hill said the decision to make the game a single player only experience was for the best, saying, " ... it would not have been possible to deliver Arkham City the way we wanted to if we'd have added multiplayer." The game is still due for release this fall.

Batman: Arkham City to be five times the size of Arkham Asylum; new screenshots released

How big will Batman: Arkham City be? Pretty darn big, according to a new interview over at GameStop. Sefton Hill, the game's director over at developer Rocksteady, stated, " The footprint of Arkham City is about five times bigger than Arkham Island," the setting for Rocksteady's last game Batman Arkham Asylum. However Hill adds, " ... our primary intention was never to create a bigger gameworld just for the sake of it." While Arkham Asylum had a " pressure-cooker atmosphere" according to Hill, Arkham City will give gamers "a huge amount of navigational freedom, but they will also feel the extreme pressure of the challenges that they face."

In the meantime you can check out some more screenshots that have been released from Batman Arkham City in our gallery. You can also see a rather ... interesting ... poster after the jump:

Batman Arkham City trailer finds out Batman's true identity

Hugo Strange is one of Batman's more tenacious and unknown foes. Premiering before crazies such as Two-Face or Joker, he is one of the only villains to correctly deduce Batman's true identity of Bruce Wayne. Naturally, in their desire to create another worthy villain for Batman to fight, the developers of Arkham City have included the deranged psychologist in their game, and if this trailer is any indication, he's going to be an absolute beast. It's a cinematic, and toes the line of the uncanny valley, but the action is spectacular and it really captures the brooding style of the comics.

Batman Arkham City gets small teaser trailer

It was announced about a year ago and earlier this year Game Informer did the first real preview of the game but now it looks like the marketing for Batman Arkham City is ramping up. Today MSN Games hosted the a new teaser trailer for the game. It's only the second such video released for the Rocksteady-developed sequel to 2009's Batman Arkham Asylum.

The 30 second video, which you can check out after the jump, is a CGI-only affair but it does show The Dark Knight doing what he does best; kicking the crap out of the bad guys. We should see a longer version of the trailer on Saturday during the Video Game Awards show on Spike TV. Batman Arkham City is still due for release in the fall of 2011.

Batman Arkham Asylum gets big Steam sale this weekend

While we wait for more info and screenshots to be released for Batman: Arkham City. the first Batman game from developer Rocksteady is ready for yet another sale. Yep, the Game of the Year edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum has a big price cut at the Steam PC game download service.

Normally priced at $39.99, the Game of the Year edition is now on sale via Steam for just $13.60, a 66 percent discount. The game is almost a steal at that price and if you have not yet played it you need to do so before Batman: Arkham City comes out.

Batman Arkham City announced for fall 2011 release

The previously revealed sequel to Batman Arkham Asylum finally has a real name and a release date. Warner Bros Interactive officially announced today that the sequel to 2009's hit super hero game will be called Batman Arkham City. The game is still a long ways off as the publisher also announced a fall 2011 release date for the game.

Developed once again by UK-based Rocksteady, the sequel will take place in Arkham City, the new location for all of Batman's crazy villains. Unlike the asylum, which was a confined space well outside of Gotham City, Arkham City is a much larger location that's inside a district of Gotham City itself. Game Informer's print magazine this month features Batman Arkham City and it looks like Catwoman is going to be one of the new characters in the game if two of the cover designs are to be believed.

Second set of Batman: Arkham Asylum action figures announced

A few months ago DC Direct announced plans to release a series of action figures based on Batman: Arkham Asylum, the hit super hero action game from developer Rocksteady and publisher Eidos. The first set of four action figures have already been announced and are due out in January 2011 but DC Direct has already revealed plans for a second set of figures from the game.

This second quartet of figures will include a new version of Batman himself (in an "Armored" version of his suit) along with three new Bat-villains: The plant-based seductress Poison Ivy, the oddly named Zsasz and the man who would like to break Batman's back Bane. The second set will be released in February 2011.

Batman: Arkham Asylum sequel to be Mark Hamill's last Joker role

Actor Mark Hamill is almost as well known for his voice work as the Joker compared to his role in some cult sci-fi film trilogy (Star . . Trek? Fight?..we can't remember offhand). He started his terrific performace work on the original Batman The Animated Series and has since voiced the Joker in a ton of TV shows, movies, DVDs and games including last year's hit Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Hamill will also voice the Joker in the upcoming Batman: Arkham Asylum sequel (which doesn't yet have an official title) but after that project his done, so is Hamill in his role as perhaps the greatest comic book villain of all time. IGN reports that Hamill has confirmed, ""This will be my last, there's no question about that. But it's the last hurrah."
