Dungeon Defenders PC to have cross-platform support with PS3 version

dungeon defenders
In January we reported that Trendy Entertainment's upcoming PC version of its fantasy action-RTS-RPG game Dungeon Defenders would feature cross-platform multiplayer with the already released iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) and Android versions of the game. Today we received a press release announcing that the PC port would also have cross-platform play with the game's PS3 version as well. This is definitely the first time a game has had so much cross-platform multiplayer support.

There's still no word on exactly when the PC version will be released. The last word was that it was coming sometime at the end of March or the beginning of April. Of course another game, Portal 2, will have cross-platform support for its PC, Mac and PS3 versions when it's released in April.

Interview: We chat with Trendy's co-founder about Dungeon Defenders

it began as a free demo to show off how easy it was to make a game using Epic Games' Unreal Development Kit. The result was Dungeon Defense, which was released several months ago. Now the tower defense-action-RPG is getting a name change in Dungeon Defenders and is close to becoming a full fledged downloadable commercial game. It's planned for release in November from developer Trendy Entertainment and publisher Reverb.

So how does a free game make the turn to a full commercial product? We got some answers to that and more from Jeremy Stieglitz, Trendy's co-founder, Development Director and Chief Technology Officer.

UDK demo Dungeon Defense to morph into full game Dungeon Defenders

It began as a free demo to show off the use of Epic Games' Unreal Developer Kit tools but now it's being reworked as a full commercial game title. Developer Trendy Entertainment has announced its plans to release Dungeon Defenders, a action-RPG-tower defense hybrid title, via download this fall.

The game was previously released last February as a free UDK demo under the title Dungeon Defense. The UDK demo reportedly only took four weeks to develop. The full version of the title under its slightly changed name will feature 15 levels and a "watercolor art style" in its depiction of a fantasy-themed tower defense game with a number of action and RPG elements including "character leveling and customization, awesome loot drops and plenty of team-oriented defensive strategy." There's also support planned for four player multiplayer via online and LAN. The title is now available for pre-order at GamersGate and Impulse and both are giving a pre-order discount of 10 percent off its regular $9.99 price.
