Fifth Resident Evil movie gets September 14, 2012 release date

The Resident Evil movies have never been huge box office hits but the modest budgets of the films based on Capcom's zombie action games have always made the movies profitable. Now Box Office Mojo has posted word that Sony's genre film label Screen Gems has already announced that the fifth Resident Evil movie will be heading to theaters on September 14, 2012.

Last year's release of the fourth film, Resident Evil Afterlife, did just OK here in the US with about $60 million generated at the box office. However the movie, the first to be shot and shown in 3D, did extremely well overseas with over $236 million in box office returns. It's currently unknown if the star of the first four Resident Evil movies, the always armed Milla Jovovich, will return for the fifth installment.

Resident Evil Afterlife tops weekend movie box office

The Resident Evil movie series, while only loosely based on the Capcom survival horror series, have been pretty successful for its studio Sony Pictures. This weekend's release of the fourth movie in the series, Resident Evil Afterlife, has been no exception. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the film easily won the box office crown this weekend with a total of $27.7 million in ticket sales.

The amount was boosted by the movie's 3D release which raises the ticket prices for those who want to see zombies coming out of the screen. The movie reportedly cost just $60 million to produce and with this weekend's box office success it's likely that a fifth movie in the series will be made. Indeed (spoiler alert) Afterlife ends with a cliffhanger that would strongly suggest a new film is already planned.

Next Resident Evil movie now planned for January 2011 release

Even though the live action Resident Evil films have had very few connections with the Capcom survival horror game series, the three movies that have been released have all been modest hits at the box office and on DVD (and to tell you the truth we kind of enjoy them in a MST3K way) Now comes word that the fourth entry in the series is heading to theaters on January 14, 2011.

Horror movie site Shock Till You Drop broke the story that Resident Evil: Afterlife would be delayed from a previously announced August 27, 2010 release in theaters. The movie's studio Screen Gems later confirmed the new date for the flick which once again will star Milla Jovovich (who in case you were not sure is the person on the right of the above photo. Paul W.S. Anderson, who wrote all three previous Resident Evil movies and directed the first, is back to both write and direct Resident Evil: Afterlife. He also happens to be the husband of Jovovich; they finally got married after a long relationship (and a baby) last August.
