Download: Gratuitous Space Battles Demo

This is the playable demo for Gratuitous Space Battles. The full game can be purchased for $22.99 and the official trailer can be seen above.

Gratuitous Space Battles is a "strategy / management / simulation game that does away with all the base building and delays and gets straight to the meat and potatoes of science-fiction games: The big space battles fought by huge spaceships with tons of laser beams and things going 'zap!', 'ka-boom!' and 'ka-pow!'. In GSB you put your ships together from modular components, arrange them into fleets, give your ships orders of engagement and then hope they emerge victorious from battle (or at least blow to bits in aesthetically pleasing ways)."

Gratuitous Space Battles pre-order gets you in the beta

Yep, its time for yet another pre-order offer that the kids are all talking about. This time its for Gratuitous Space Battles, the upcoming space-based strategy-management game from indie developer Positech Games. The developer wants you (yes, even you in the back) to give up $19.95 of your hard-earned money for the game up front before its release.

However, it's taking a page from the Stardock rulebook on pre-orders by allowing folks who put their money where their mouth is to check out the beta of the game ahead of time. There's no word yet on when the game itself will be released. If you are not inclined to take a risk with your money don't fret; a free demo of Gratuitous Space Battles is promised for release before the full game.

New video gets "Gratuitous" in its "Space Battles"

It's not like we haven't see space-based action-strategy games before; we have. But there's something about a game that calls itself "Gratuitous Space Battles" that makes us sit up, take notice and (hopefully) want to play the game. A new YouTube video showing off gameplay from the title certainly did that for us.

The game is the newest from indie game developer Positech Games, which is basically one guy, a UK bloke named Cliff Harris who has created quite a few cult hit titles on his own. Yet this new game is certainly more action packed than, say, Democracy 2. Hopefully we won't have to wait much longer to get "gratuitous" with it (we love that word).

Inarguration Day brings new related game releases and deals

In about a half-hour, we will have a new President of the US. So it makes sense that some folks are taking advantage of the opportunity to promote new games and game deals. One of these companies is IGS who is releasing a new PC game called Commander in Chief. Developed by French based Eversim the title was previously released in Europe as Mission President. It allows players to take over as the leader of any country on Earth. You can create a Cabinet to help run the government and then makes decisions on military, economic, social and other issues.

Also today, the Democracy 2 web site is offering a one-day online sale of their political sim game from developer Positech Games. You can purchase and download the full version for just $9.99, a 50 percent discount from its usual price. You can download a free demo of the game right here at Big Download.
