Download: Plants vs Zombies Demo

This is the official demo for Plants vs Zombies, a lawn defense game published by Popcap Games.

"A mob of fun-loving zombies is about to invade your home, and your only defense is an arsenal of 49 zombie-zapping plants. Use peashooters, wall-nuts, cherry bombs and more to mulchify 26 types of zombies before they can reach your front door. Each zombie has its own special skills, so you'll need to think fast and plant faster to combat them all. But be careful how you use your limited supply of greens and seeds as you battle the fun-dead, obstacles like a setting sun, creeping fog and a swimming pool add to the challenge. And with five game modes to dig into, the fun never dies! "

Plants Vs. Zombies turning into big sales hit for PopCap

Zombies are all the rage in games these days, even in casual titles like the recently released Plants Vs Zombies tower defense game from PopCap. The game has generated lots of good reviews but according to a new article on Gamasutra it's also generating high sales as well.

How high? According to a quote from PopCap's PR head Garth Chouteau, "At this very early point in its history, it's the best-selling game PopCap's ever had." And that's saying something considering PopCap has also had huge casual game sales with the Peggle and Bejeweled series. Part of the reason is that the game, while still in the casual genre, also appeals to another audience. Chouteau says, "At the moment, we'd estimate that at least half of all buyers of PvZ would fall into the 'hardcore' category." Yep, it's a true "hardcore casual' game and in this game that means big bucks all around.

PopCap Games VP heading to Blizzard

In the past several months, casual game developer PopCap has offered up two free add-ons for World of Warcraft players; fully playable in-game versions of PopCap's casual games Peggle and Bejeweled. Now it appears there's an even deeper connection. Our sister site Joystiq is reporting that Popcap's vice president of game platforms Greg Canessa has left the company to work at World of Warcraft creators Blizzard Entertainment.

What Canessa is working on is still rather vague with Joystiq's unnamed sources saying he is involved in an "unannounced project in the online space" for Blizzard. That could mean anything, of course, but Canessa's experience at both PopCap and Microsoft (where he helped to launch the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade business) would suggest that Blizzard has some downloadable casual games in mind for the future.

Plants vs Zombies trailer uses special pest control

This gameplay trailer for Plants vs Zombies runs down a few of the units players will have at their disposal to repel the zombie invasion. Some zombies are tougher than others and require special plants to counter. However, the trailer does not indicate what one needs to repel the zombie bobsled team. Players will have a chance to find out for themselves when the casual strategy game releases on May 5th.

World of Warcraft players can 'Peggle' to their heart's content

PopCap Games surprised many when they announced that they were offering World of Warcraft players a way to play their addictive puzzle game Bejeweled 2 in Blizzard's hit MMO. Today Popcap Games struck again as they have doubled their casual game addition plans for World of Warcraft.

Yep, you guessed it. Peggle is now also available to download and play for free for any World of Warcraft player. Now you can take time from your raid to fire balls to complete the game's puzzles. Playing the game can even affect your World of Warcraft character. You can grab both casual game mods over at PopCap's web site. Meanwhile our sister site WoWInsider has their own impressions of the Peggle add-on. Their verdict? "We can't recommend a download enough."

Download: Plants vs Zombies 'Zombies on Your Lawn' Song

Plants vs Zombies is an upcoming casual strategy game from Popcap, the developers of games like Bejeweled and Peggle. Similar to the games, the song featured in this music video - "Zombies on Your Lawn" - is really easy to get stuck in your head. The best way to solve that problem is to download the song and listen to your heart's content. The song is performed by Laura Shigihara and it is available in both English and Japanese.

Plants vs Zombies is scheduled to release on May 5th, and those that pre-purchase via Steam will get Heavy Weapons Deluxe for free.

Temp workers help out with Plants Vs Zombies

It's a lonely life as a temp worker sometimes. Sometimes you know when your job ends and sometimes you don't. You are likely doing menial tasks for folks who work at the job permanently. And then there's the problems temps faces if they are undead zombies.

Fortunately the folks at Popcap Games are here to help the undead temp workers with a new short documentary that deals with all of the issues that zombies have to face in the workplace. Oh, and its also an easy way to promote Popcap's next major casual game Plants Vs Zombies. But in the end it's all about the workers . . . the poor, flesh eating temps. Think of them, won't you?

(Not) April Fool's Alert: Plants Vs. Zombies announced

We were warned . . . er, told that casual game publisher PopCap's next major title would involve some kind of non-violent zombie gameplay a few months ago. Today PopCap finally revealed the actual title: Plants Vs. Zombies. You see, there are these plants and they are going to be fighting zombies. Yes, we know . . . it's horribly complicated.

It's also not an April Fool's joke. The game, which will have RTS and tower defense elements, is due for release on May 5. You can sign up for "Zombie Alerts" at the game's official web site. Signing up also gives you a way to download and play the full version before the public release. In the meantime you can check out the Flash-based music video which has (you caught us) plants and zombies.
