Playstation Move PC support is official ... sort of

playstation move
A little while ago Microsoft announced that its Kinect motion controller-camera for the Xbox 360 would soon get an official PC SDK. Now Sony has announced that it will offer an SDK for its Playstation Move motion controller that will allow anyone to make applications for the controller with a PC as one of its development tools.

Reveals on Sony's official Playstation blog site, the software application that will be released for this task is called Move.Me. The software resides on a Playstation 3 console and developers can export data to a PC in order to develop apps that will use the Playstation Move controller. It's not clear if the apps that are developed on the PC can actually use them natively. The software is being release as is to primarily academics, researchers, and hobbyists.

Playstation Move PC support hinted in GDC 2011 panel description

We have seen what third party developers have done with PC hacks and programs for the Xbox 360's Kinect motion camera controller over the past few months. However Microsoft has yet to offer up any official PC support for the device. Now a listing of an panel for the upcoming 2011 edition of the Game Developers Conference hints strongly that Sony might be offering official PC support for its Playstation Move motion controller.

The panel, titled "Update on PlayStationMove Development (Presented by SCEA)" states that among other things it will "discuss the new Move Server project that will make it possible for academics and hobbyists to develop software using the PlayStation Move controller on their own PCs." The panel itself will be held on March 2.

Ubisoft: R.U.S.E. plays better with Playstation's Move controller than PC's controls

One of the big advantages RTS players have for the PC is the precise use of the mouse and keyboard controllers versus normal console controllers. But in the "Them's fighin' words" category comes a new Eurogamer interview where Ubisoft producer Mathieu Girard claims playing its upcoming RTS game R.U.S.E. is actually better on the Playstation 3 port with the new Playstation Move motion controller.

Girard states that the development team R.U.S.E. put in support for the Move controller in the PS3 port pretty quickly, saying it only starting adding that support "four or five weeks ago". He then makes the bold claim that playing with the Move controller is " ... better than on PC with mouse and keyboard because you can play on a couch, really relaxed, and you don't have to get close to your screen, and you don't have to make large movements." Later he admits that PC players are " ... still going to be a bit more efficient playing with a mouse and keyboard because you have shortcuts." However he still feels that the Move controller is better "for the comfort".

As we mentioned on Monday, a PC demo for R.U.S.E. is due out sometime tomorrow with the full game scheduled for release on September 7. The Playstation Move controller is due for release in the US on September 19.
