Download: Bulletstorm Soundtrack

While more and more game soundtracks are being released as paid separate products the folks at developers People Can Fly and Epic Games have decided to go ahead and release the music from the recent first person shooter Bulletstorm for free.

The soundtrack contains 24 separate tracks totaling 55 minutes of music from the game's composers Michal Cielecki and Krzysztof Wierzynkiewicz. Unfortunately the soundtrack doesn't have the "Disco Inferno" track that is heard in the game while your character is in a, well, futuristic disco. However you can't go wrong with the price and quite frankly we would like to see more soundtracks release for free.

Bulletstorm PC demo storms onto Steam and Games For Windows Live

The ultra violent and very cool sci-fi first person shooter Bulletstorm has been lacking a free PC demo, unlike its console versions. That made PC gamers, understandably, not happy. That situation changed today as Epic Games announced that the demo for the title is now finally available via both Steam and the Games For Windows Live client software.

It's not immediately clear what content is in the PC demo but we are betting that it will be identical to what was put into the console version. That demo was released a few weeks before the main game itself shipped to stores on February 22.

Review: Bulletstorm

Wrapping a guy in an explosive flail and then kicking him into a set of spikes before detonating it. Knocking over a man with a huge cannonball, then exploding it. Shooting a radio-controlled bullet into a man, then steering him into a huge wall of spikes. These are but a few of Bulletstorm's 131 skill shots. In telling you them, we hope to emphasize a singular, focused point: Bulletstorm is not a normal first-person shooter. You won't really be challenged to avoid dying, and enemies mostly serve as cannon fodder for your rather impressive arsenal. Rather, it's a surprisingly smart shooter that is genre savvy in its plot and exceedingly intelligent in its mechanics. While it's a bit short (for single-player enthusiasts, anyway), it's also quite fantastic and merges arcade scoring with oh-so-satisfying murder.

Bulletstorm trailer gets serious

Bulletstorm has had plenty of goofy trailers that poke fun at the skillshots and overt machismo, but this trailer is an oddity: one that is completely serious. Given that it is backed by a suitably epic soundtrack, this is no surprise. It shows off a lot of the major points of the story in preparation for players getting hold of the game, but it doesn't show any gameplay. This isn't really a problem, though, since this trailer is more to get you pumped than to make sure you know how it plays. It it does a great job of that.

Bulletstorm getting Gun Sonata map pack later this spring for PC

Bulletstorm officially comes out for the PC and other platforms today but the first person shooter's co-developers People Can Fly and Epic Games already have plans to offer up some additional content to the game in the near future. Today Bulletstorm's publisher Electronic Arts announced plans to release the downloadable Gun Sonata map pack sometime later this spring. While the press release that announced the pack didn't mention a PC version Big Download confirmed with EA's PR rep that it would be made available for PC players as well.

The map pack will cost $9.99 and will add five new maps to Bulletstorm. Three of them will be for the game's four player co-op themed Anarchy mode while the other two maps (Crash Site and Guns of Stygia) will be for the game's single player (with online leaderboards) Echo mode. The Gun Sonata map pack will also add two "enhancements" (the Flamingo and the Pulp) for the player's Leash weapon.

Bulletstorm co-op campaign mode didn't work, says Bleszinski

Bulletstorm does have a four player co-op Anarchy mode featuring players facing waves of enemies. But the upcoming first person shooter from co-developers People Can Fly and Epic Games doesn't have support for co-op in the main single player campaign. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Epic's design director Cliff Bleszinkski states that at one point the team put in such a mode in Bulletstorm.

While in theory co-op support for the game's campaign worked, he states, " ... we found that the game shifted from being this kind of puzzle shooter into essentially this downhill skiing simulator, where people were seeing how fast they could get to the bottom of the mountain." Since Bulletstorm is supposed to be about players setting things up to take out enemies with "Skillshots" they ditched the campaign co-op mode. Bleszinkski states, " .. it gave us the chance to put in one-offs that could only be controlled by one player."

Bulletstorm PC demo coming after all after full game is released

Bulletstorm will be released this Tuesday for the PC and other platforms. However the demo for the over-the-top first person shooter has already come out for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Now it looks like PC fans will be getting their own demo of the game after all.

Epic Games' VP Mark Rein announced via his Twitter page, "Bulletstorm PC demo is in the works! Won't make it in time for ship date but should be available shortly after." The console demo showcased a tiny part of the full game's "Echo Mode" where you can rack up the Skillpoints and then compare your final score with your buddies.

Bulletstorm trailer brings the boom

We're in the final stretch of waiting, as Bulletstorm drops on Tuesday. Needless to say, we're excited about the game, and anybody who has been following it is likely pretty pumped too. To drive the hype to a fever pitch, Epic has released another trailer. Since we are so close to release, it's got nothing particularly special. Instead, it gets the blood flowing with a killer soundtrack and moves timed to the music. It's meaningless, but in that adrenaline-pumping way that just makes you eager to blow away some mutants.

Bulletstorm PC won't get map editor; playing the game as a typical shooter

Bulletstorm is less than a week before its release but PC mod makers hoping to make new levels and mods for the upcoming shooter are going to be sad to learn that the PC port won't come with a level editor. As explained by a rep from the game's co-developer Epic Games in a message board post, "In Bulletstorm, we would have had to make modifications to the Unreal Editor to account for the skillshot system. We spent years developing the skillshot system and carefully balancing weapons, and it was a resource matter - make an editor we can ship with the game or keep polishing Bulletstorm for release."

The post points out that Epic releases the UDK free game development tools that are updated every month with new features and improvements.

In related news, the official blog site for Bulletstorm's other developer People Can Fly talks about how gamers who are used to the standard military shooters can choose to play Bulletstorm without the "flair" of things like the Skillshot HUD or by not using the Kick or Leash features. You can check out a trailer showing how the game can be played like a standard shooter after the jump:

Another Bulletpoints trailer, another series of shots of an Epic employee doing something stupid. In this cash, It's CliffyB lighting his hands on fire with hairspray while thinking about enemy impalement. As with all the Bulletpoints trailers, it's mostly empty in terms of content, and serves more as a quick laugh and advertisement for Bulletstorm's release next week.
