Panzer Corps announced

One of the most well known PC WWII strategy war games is the Panzer General series. There hasn't been a new PC game in that franchise in some time (although an Xbox Live Arcade game from developer Petroglyph has been released) but today Slitherine Software announced plans to release Panzer Corps, which it is calling a "homage" to the Panzer General series.

Panzer Corps will take place in the European Theater of WWII with 26 missions in a non-linear campaign, 21 maps and over 400 units. In addition core units will stay with you and can be upgraded when new weapon technology is unlocked. The game is due out in early 2011.

GoG.com adds Panzer General 3D Assault to game line-up

In the 1980's and early 1990's war games on the PC were not a niche product as they are now but a highly popular game genre. One of the leading publishers of such games was Strategic Simulations Inc or SSI and one of their most popular series was the Panzer General WWII themed titles. Today the SSI brand is owned by Ubisoft which has done little to keep the brand alive

Today the DRM-free web site GoG.com has added one of the later games in the Panzer General series to its site. Panzer General 3D Assault was the first game in the series to have a full 3D engine. Released in 1999, the game is now available from GoG.com for $9.99.

Boot Disk: Panzer General

Sometimes you just need to sit down, slide a floppy into your A: drive, and enjoy gaming retro style. We know this all too well! That's why we have a list of the best and brightest from days long gone. These are some of our favorite games of all time, and we're sure that you'll love them as much as we do, if not more. Welcome to Boot Disk, and enjoy the retro ride!

Some strategy games are timeless, either due to the strength of their execution or the quality of gameplay contained within. Panzer General is one of those games, and despite being quite old, it's a classic of the genre. It launched the highly-regarded Generals series from SSI, was one of the first games to include a campaign that could be modified through player actions, and was a great game overall. Those that want to relax with a challenging and well-designed turn-based strategy game will find few games better than Panzer General, and it's still quite playable despite its old age. You just need DOSBox.
