Weekend downloadable game sales save you money

Sailing takes us away . .. oh, wait. That's would be sales, not sailing (sorry Christopher Cross). If you are looking to save a few buck this weekend, the various downloadable PC game sites have you covered:

PC game weekend sales deals hit the Net

As we work for the weekend, we all need a second chance to go off the deep end . . . and find some great PC game deals. Over at GoGamer.com the have a number of retail box copies that are for sale, including Overlord for just $5.90 and Mirror's Edge for just $19.90.

Direct2Drive has a few titles of interest that are on sale until Sunday including Major League Baseball 2K9 for just $9.99. The recent Midway action-driving game Wheelman is on sale "for a limited time" for $29.99. GamersGate has Kane and Lynch: Dead Men on sale for just $14.95 this weekend. They also have the upcoming RTS game Stalin Vs. Martians on sale for 20 percent off before its release next week. Finally Steam's weekend sales deal is for Worldwide Soccer Manager 2009 which has had its price reduced 50 percent to $14.99 this weekend.

Gametap makes Overlord free to play again

Gametap's regular Thursday update has been made today because of the holiday and this week the game download/subscription service has once again made the fantasy action-strategy-RPG title Overlord free to play.

You will be able to play the rather unique game from developer Triumph Studios and publisher Codemasters on Gametap until Dec. 29. In addition the latest American McGee's Grimm episode, A Christmas Carol, is free to play until Dec. 31. Two more games have been added to Gametap's premimum service; the Meridian4 published adventure title Al Emmo and the Lost Dutchman's Mine and the Firefly Studios developed RTS game Stronghold Crusader Extreme.

Overlord on sale on Steam; client update released


As they always do, Valve offers up a game from their Steam service with a highly cut price point for one weekend only. This weekend it's for Overlord, the critically acclaimed action-strategy-RPG where you get to play as a high fantasy bad guy. Developed by Triumph Studios and published by Codemasters, Overlord is now on sale via Steam for just $9.99. That 75 percent off its normal price. A sequel, Overlord II, is due out in 2009.

Valve has also released a new Steam client update. The patch notes give the details on what's included. The update supposedly improved Steam's start up time, added support for an upcoming server groups feature in their zombie co-op shooter Left 4 Dead and has a number of bug fixes.

Two new free games on Gametap this week

Gametap continues to offer its customers free games to check out. Today the download service offers up two free titles. One is Overlord, the 2007 released action-RPG where you get to play as a fantasy bad guy. The Triumph Studios-Codemasters game is available to play for free for one week only at Gametap. Available for free at any time is Penumbra Overture, the first game in the horror adventure series from developer Frictional Games.

Two more games are added to Gametap's paid premimum service: the stand alone expansion RTS game Supreme Commander Forged Alliance from Gas Powered Games and THQ and the fantasy fighting game Die by the Sword from Treyarch and Interplay. The latter includes the game's expansion pack Limb from Limb.
