First Otherland screenshots and details revealed

On Wednesday we reported on the announcement of a newly revealed sci-fi MMO titled Otherland. Based on the novels of the same name by author Tad Williams, the Unreal Engine 3 based game is a big budget and highly ambitious title for German publisher DTP Entertainment. Now the publisher has issued the first screenshots of the game, showing off the unusual art style of Otherland's near-future world along with one of its "virtual" worlds Mars.

A few previews of the game have also popped up on some web sites including Eurogamer which seems to describe a highly complex game involving your players interacting in a virtual world with a central hub that gives access to a number of other virtual worlds (only Mars was shown in the screenshots and preview). The game is admittedly a long way off (its release date is sometime in 2010 and is currently only 15 percent complete, according to the Eurogamer article) so it remains to be seen if Otherland can truly come close to its developer's design plans.

Otherland MMO announced

The MMO genre continues to get more and more crowded with the announcement of yet another new major project in the works. German publisher DTP Entertainment has revealed plans to make an Unreal Engine 3 based MMO title called Otherland. This game is based on the four well known Otherland sci-fi novels from author Tad Williams. The novels depict a near future where people connect directly to computers to experience virtual worlds.

The game itself is being developed by Singapore based studio RealU (owned by DTP) with creative input from Williams itself. The game won't follow the storyline of the novels but "...players will experience their own individual stories within the Otherland universe and will encounter many of the familiar characters from the books." The game is due for release in 2010.
