Red River trailer goes from Detroit to Tajikistan

Codemasters is soon to release its expansion for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, and there's yet another trailer for the expansion. This trailer, which has plenty of gameplay footage from Red River, explores the life of an African-American squad leader from Detroit as he goes from being a criminal to an upstanding member of the United States Marine Corps. There's plenty of combat and first-person footage, as well as cinematic sequences rendered in-game, so those that want a look at what Red River will be offering, this is your best chance.

Operation Flashpoint Red River officially announced

Revealed last month, Codemasters has now issued the official press release announcing Operation Flashpoint: Red River, the upcoming third game in the military shooter franchise. This game is supposedly being build around four-player co-op gameplay although it will still have a single player mode.

Set in the country of Tajikistan, the game centers on a group of US Marines that will deal with a threat from the Chinese PLA. The game will feature three "acts" that can be played in single player or in "drop in-drop out" co-op play. Look for improved AI, a better inventory system, player class roles, XP unlocks and more. The game is due out in 2011. By the way the image you see above is not an in-game screenshot but merely a "target visual" that Codemasters wants to reach for the game.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River revealed

It's been known for a while that developer-publisher Codemasters has been developing a follow up to 2009's military shooter Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising (shown above). Now that game has an official name: Operation Flashpoint: Red River. The title was revealed by Computer and Video Games via the new issue of the Official Xbox Magazine.

Unfortunately there's little else that's been revealed about the game other than a release date of sometime in 2011 and that the magazine feels that "the sequel is a tighter, more focused game" than Dragon Rising. Certainly the 2009 game was massive in terms of scope but it got mixed reviews in terms of its final execution.

No more DLC for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising; sequel hinted?

Just before the release of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, publisher Codemasters bragged that it had lots of future DLC plans for the military shooter. Well it looks like those plans have been cut short. Codemasters did release two DLC updates to the game after it shipped last October but now it looks like they are ending all future patches for the title.

In a post on the game's message boards, Codemasters' community manager for the game stated, "the team have now completed the "Dragon Rising" chapter of Operation Flashpoint and that's it for DR-related content going forward." However the post seems to suggest that Codemasters may already be prepping a new Op Flash title with the community manager stating, " . . . the vast majority of the team are already busy planning the future of modern combat."

Codemasters looking for new money?

UK-based publisher Codemasters has not been immune to the current economic situation and today reports are that the company is close to securing some more money after 2009 left it short of cash, according to a new report at the UK based Time Online web site.

The story claims that in addition to new funds from existing investors Balderton Capital and Goldman Sachs Codemasters will gain money from an unnamed new investor source. However the publisher's current release schedule is lacking in upcoming games. After releasing several titles in 2009, including Damnation, Fuel, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and Dirt 2 the company currently has just one upcoming game that's officially announced; the long-delayed MMO Jumpgate Evolution.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising trailer presents the Overwatch

Although there's no official release date, we're sure that the Operation Flashpoing: Dragon Rising 'Overwatch' DLC expansion will be hitting the PC version sometime soon. Until then, this trailer provides a good look at what the extra content has to offer. The playable demo can be downloaded here.

"The 'Overwatch' DLC extends the unique Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising experience in solo, co-operative and adversarial play. In new multiplayer mode Blindside the PLA must complete objectives in the shortest time possible while the USMC defends in tense, tactical engagements. An additional new mode, Supremacy, tasks opposing forces to occupy strategically vital positions featuring force multipliers like gun emplacements and air strikes.

These new multiplayer modes are complimented by two exhilarating new FTEs. In Friendly Skies, PLA anti-aircraft artillery prevents US airborne reinforcements inserting into the combat zone. Players must remove that threat and then defend the position from a PLA counter attack. In Hostile Takeover, intel reveals enemy movement in the village of Armudan, a perfect base for launching attacks deep into enemy territory. Gamers must flush out the PLA, establish a perimeter and hold their ground against a new enemy assault."
