Pirates of Black Cove taking sign ups for closed beta test

Announced as part of publisher Paradox Interactive's massive press event last January, the RTS-RPG hybrid game Pirates of Black Cove is looking for folks to join its upcoming closed beta test. Today the publisher announced that sign ups for the beta are being taken at Paradox's web site. Folks have until March 31 to sign up and will be notified by April 7 if they have been selected to participate in the beta test.

Developed by Nitro Games, the title puts you in charge of a pirate crew in the 16th century as you roam searching for missions and treasure with the goal to become king of all pirates. The game is due for release sometime in the second quarter of 2011.

Pirates of Black Cove announced

Pirates continue to be popular aspects of pop culture. Today Publisher Paradox Interactive announced the latest such game that has the scurry sailors of the high seas. The strategy title Pirates of Black Cove, developed by frequent Paradox collaborator Nitro Games, was revealed today as part of the publisher's Paradox Convention press event.

The game will allow you to select from one of several different kinds of pirate captains who then gathers a crew to sail the seven seas in three campaigns. You go on quests to gather treasure, battle other pirates and keep your crew in line by supplying them with rum. Your ultimate goal is, naturally, King of the Pirates. The game itself is due out in the second quarter of 2011.

Pirates invade in new Commander: Conquest of the Americas DLC pack

There's some scurvy characters around in the newly announced and released downloadable expansion pack for Commander: Conquest of the Americas. The DLC, titled Pirates Treasure Chest, is the second such pack for the historical strategy game from developer Nitro Games and publisher Paradox Interactive.

The DLC adds a new island to the game, Tortuga, where players can choose to hire pirate ships and go on quests to find treasure. Of course there's always the option to go in the other direction and hunt down pirate ships and take their booty from them. The DLC should be available via various download sites, including GamersGate, today for $4.99.

The game will have you battling big bosses while collecting bonuses and firing powerful weapons while also having several levels of difficulty. And that name; it's almost worth the $4.99 by itself.

Conquest of the Americas trailer teaches the basics of trading

We'll always welcome trailers that detail gameplay systems with open arms, and the quiet title Commander: Conquest of the Americas gives us one. Granted, it's something we aren't really concerned with learning (trading) but it gives a good look at the in-game engine while showing a bit about the new colonization-oriented game. Granted, we're not that fond of the voice-over, but it's tolerable enough to get to the meat of the trailer. We also wish that the resolution was a little higher so that the interface was more readable, but there's only so much you can do with streaming internet trailers.

Developer Nitro Games and publisher Paradox Interactive have released a playable demo of Commander Conquest of the Americas. The full version of the historical strategy-sim game is scheduled to be released by Paradox on July 30.

The demo will let players try out a portion of the game which is all about the colonization of the "New World" in the 16th century. Players control one of the European nations who are trying to establish colonies in the Americas and keep them thriving and growing through trade from the colonies to the home country and also through military means via naval warfare.

Commander: Conquest of the Americas coming July 30

It looks like StarCraft II won't be the only PC game coming out next week. Paradox Interactive has just announced that the historical naval strategy game Commander: Conquest of the Americas has "gone gold" and will be released via download and through retail outlets on July 30.

Developed by Nitro Games (who previously released East India Company, also for Paradox Interactive) the game is set in the 16th century with players able to pick from one of seven European nations that are out to conquer the "New World" through trade and warfare. Players can establish colonies and grow their American empire and also take part in RTS-style naval battles. If you pre-order the game you get some extra content including "three extra ships, three new resources, seven new historical Commanders (one for each nation) and three new historical naval battles."

East India Company expansion trailer revisits the Battle of Trafalgar

East India Company: Battle of Trafalgar is a stand-alone add-on to the naval strategy game, East India Company. It's scheduled to release on via digital download on December 8th. The East India Company demo can be downloaded here.

"A complement to the original East India Company, East India Company: Battle of Trafalgar recreates the legendary naval battle fought between the British Royal navy and the combined fleets of the French and Spanish navies during the height of the Napoleonic wars in late 1805. Featuring historically accurate ships from all three fleets along with the key naval personnel of the battle, East India Company: Battle of Trafalgar is a simulation of what in reality was the most decisive British naval victory of the war as, led by Admiral Lord Nelson aboard HMS Victory, an outnumbered British fleet sank 22 enemy vessels off of the South West coast of Spain without a single ship of their own being lost."
