BioWare's Neverwinter Nights downloadable modules no longer available

If you happened to get a copy of BioWare's original Neverwinter Nights RPG and wanted to check out some of their extra downloadable modules for the game, you are out of luck at least for now. BioWare is no longer selling or supporting the many downloadable modules (Kingmaker, ShadowGuard, Witch's Wake, Pirates of the Sword Coast, Infinite Dungeons and Wyvern Crown of Cormyr) they have created for the game. In fact they have not been doing so since the end of August.

What happened? According to BioWare's own message boards, the game's publisher Atari, " . . . has asked us to stop selling the modules through our store. All support for NwN products is now handled directly by Atari through their customer support channels." Atari currently owns the rights to the game but at the moment they are not selling the original Neverwinter Night title or any of the downloadable modules on their online store. People who have already purchased and installed the downloadable modules can still play them on their PC.

Recent Neverwinter Nights 2 expansion does away with install limits

In late April Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate was made available for download as an official expansion to the popular fantasy RPG. However, many gamers were not happy that publisher Atari put in a limit to installs of the expansion (just three in fact). Now it looks like Atari has actually listened to consumers.

According to a note on the Ossian Studios web site (the developer of the expansion pack) Atari has now removed the install limit which means gamers can install the expansion as many times as they want on as many PCs as they want. The one-time online activation for the expansion is still in place, however.

Neverwinter Nights 2 downloadable expansion coming April 29

A long-in-development official downloadable expansion for the fantasy RPG Neverwinter Nights 2 finally has a release date. Today Atari announced that Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate will be made available for download on Wednesday, April 29 for $9.99. The expansion can be purchased and downloaded on that date via the Atari online store.

Developed by Ossian Studios, the expansion was first announced in 2007 but development issues have delayed its release until now. In early March the head of the development studio announced that Mysteries of Westgate had finally gone gold. The expansion will add about 15 more hours to the already extensive Neverwinter Nights 2 gameplay with new quests, monsters and more new content.

Long-in-development Neverwinter Nights 2 expansion due out soon?

The Neverwinter Nights franchise has always been mod friendly for anyone to develop their own home-grown expansions. Now a long awaited downloadable expansion for Neverwinter Nights 2 looks like it will finally be released soon via publisher Atari.

The expansion is titled Mysteries of Westgate and has been in development for literally years by small Vancouver based Ossian Studios. In fact it was originally supposed to be released in 2007. This week on the game's official message boards Ossian CEO Alan Miranda stated, "I've gotten the official Atari stamp of approval today, meaning that MoW is now gold."

There's no word yet on a release date for the expansion nor a price point. More info on the expansion can be found at Ossian's web site. Mysteries of Westgate is promised to have a 15-plus hour non-linear single player campaign with four new monsters, new music and voice over work and more. Again it will be a digital download release only; there are no plans to release the game to stores.

Will there be a third Neverwinter Nights 2 expansion?

Atari's release of Neverwinter Nights 2 and its two expansion packs have been solid releases for the publisher in an otherwise shaky time for the company. Now that Atari seems to be getting back on track with a number of major releases set for 2009, it could also be planning to release a third expansion pack for the RPG.

Chatting with members of Atari's European team, the fan-run Neverwinter Nights Podcast revealed that discussions are going on for such an expansion pack. There's no word on who would develop the expansion but it's not a stretch to believe that Obsidian Entertainment, who created the original game and the first two expansions, is ready to make the third as well..
