Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - February 11

So ends another week. Next week is actually kind of slow in the new game release market but we think there will be some interesting news down the pike anyway.

Review: NBA 2K11

NBA 2K11 is in the unique position of being the only licensed basketball game currently available for the PC. However, players shouldn't feel like they're forced into settling for the only game in town, because it happens to be a great basketball game on any platform. The fact that it features an homage to Michael Jordan's incredible career adds more incentive to hit the court, and while the game has its share of quirks, the benefits far outweigh the problems.

NBA 2K11 trailer gets cocky in the after-game conference

It seems that even in the semi-fictional world of NBA 2K11, players can get a little cocky. This trailer for the new basketball title shows off comedian Deon Cole as he wraps up a game of NBA 2K11 with a little post-game press conference with himself, the star player. Needless to say, it's both irreverent and it shows off a gameplay element of NBA 2K11 that we haven't seen yet. If you are looking with interest towards the game, this is a must-watch trailer. It's funny even if you aren't interested in sports games, though, thanks to just how goofy it is.

NBA 2K11 trailer wants to become the greatest

Looking for a nonstop montage of dunks, rebounds, and shots? Then this launch trailer for NBA 2K11 has got what you desire. It is as one would expect from a launch trailer: full of all the exciting gameplay footage and none of the potential drudgery. Michael Jordan also makes an appearance at the end, both in game form and art form. There's not much else to the trailer, but it's a basketball game. What else can you really show in your trailer except people scoring baskets? NBA 2K11 is out now.

NBA 2K11 trailer gets cooking with Derrick Rose

It seems NBA 2K11 really wants to push its star power potential. This newest trailer for the basketball game shows shots of Derrick Rose cooking in a kitchen with shots of his plays in NBA 2K11. It's not as meditative as the last trailer, and includes a rather surreal moment at the end, but it's oddly funny. The typical montage music, the complete disconnect between the real life segments and the gameplay clips, and the lack of expression on the players makes it a bit campy. And at the end, Chef Pooh be straight cookin'!!

This Week In PC Games - October 4-10

With some last minute changes to a few PC game release dates, this week is looking a bit bare in terms of new game titles. However there is a free campaign to download for a popular zombie shooter along with a historical RTS game and even a basketball title.
Left 4 Dead 1/2: The Sacrifice: Both of Valve's zombie shooters will be getting the same DLC on Tuesday with The Sacrifice telling the final tale of the original game's cast. While officially Bill bites it at the end, players can choose which character has to take it on the chin. Left 4 Dead 2 players can also download the original game's No Mercy campaign.

NBA 2K11 wonders about Michael Jordan's competitiveness

One of the big draws of sports games is the ability to compete with players and teams that would not normally go against each other. Dead and retired players, players from the same team, and fictional players all make up the fantasy. This trailer for NBA 2K11 embraces this fantasy and has a sit down with Michael Jordan about his career and basketball. While short, it's only meant to convey one thing: that Michael Jordan wonders about what competing against the best players of today would be like when he was in his prime. That's it.

NBA 2K11 trailer brings the noise

While we don't normally pay much attention to sports trailers (we aren't much for sports), this NBA 2K11 trailer is a lot more substantial than your average trailer. It's very straightforward: it's a collection of the sounds, voices, and other audio-related goodies you will come across during your time on the basketball court. The trailer has announcers, audience reactions, player dialogue, and even post-game, season-related commentary. This sort of massive reveal feels unusual, and in a sense it feels like NBA 2K11 is following the example set by FIFA 11's trailers: give the players meat on the game, don't just make a flashy video.

Take Two Interactive announces better revenues for last quarter

Publisher Take Two Interactive is always the last of the publicly trade game publishers to reveal its financial results. Today the company revealed that for the quarter that ended on July 31 it generated $354.1 million in revenue, a massive increase compared to the $94.9 million it made for the same period a year ago. Take Two recorded a profit of $12.4 million for the quarter compared to a loss of $58.3 million for the same period a year ago.

Part of the reason for the better numbers were the high sales of the console only game Red Dead Redemption which Take Two said has sold 6.9 million copies since its release last May. The publisher's PC game release schedule includes Civilization V, NBA 2K11 and the next Borderlands DLC release. Oddly, the press release makes no mention of Max Payne 3, the long-in-development action game that's been delayed a number of times.
