Call of Duty Black Ops Zombie co-op mode confirmed; Combat Training revealed

Confirming one of the most poorly kept secrets in gaming, publisher Activision has announced that there will be a zombie co-op mode in its upcoming first person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops. The mode was first introduced by the game's developer Treyarch in its previous game in the series, Call of Duty: World at War, where up to four players faced off against waves of Nazi zombies.

Specific details about the zombie co-op mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops have yet to be revealed. However Activision did reveal that there will also be another six player co-op mode in the game called Combat Training where players can increase their character rank going up against enemy AI.

Call of Duty: Black Ops won't have co-op in single player campaign

In 2008, developer Treyarch finally brought co-op support to the Call of Duty franchise with a co-op mode in the WWII shooter Call of Duty: World at War's single player campaign. It also had the surprising cool four player Nazi Zombie mode. However it looks like Treyarch is doing something a bit different for the co-op modes for their follow-up Call of Duty: Black Ops.

MTV reports that Call of Duty: Black Ops won't have co-op support for the game's single player campaign. However Treyarch's studio head Mark Lamia states, "We're crafting unique co-op modes around that experience, but it is different than what people think." Hopefully the team is coming up with something even cooler than Nazi zombies.

PC owners to wait for first Call of Duty: World at War DLC

Activision sent over a couple of extra screenshots showing off more of the first major content update for Call of Duty: World at War. The WWII shooter from their internal developer Treyarch will have three new multiplayer maps but these new screenshots show off the fourth map, "Verrückt" (Zombie Asylum). That's the all new Nazi Zombie level that will double the number of such maps for the game.

While PS3 and Xbox 360 owners will get to download the map pack on March 19, PC owners will have to way a bit longer. Activision isn't giving any exact dates but says that the PC map pack for the game is "coming soon"

New Nazi Zombie level coming in Call of Duty: World at War DLC?

Last week the long awaited 1.2 PC patch for Call of Duty: World at War was released and it included a new multiplayer map (actually a revised version of an older map). But developer Treyarch and publisher Activision are planning to release a major map pack for the WWII shooter and it looks like more specific news will be coming soon-ish.

The game's official web site is already flashing a message that you can see above you for a few seconds and a message on the game's official message board also confirms that we can expect to see at least one new official Nazi Zombie level will be included in the package. The big question: Will PC owners have to wait until after their console counterparts to get access to the map pack? We should know something soon.

Call of Duty: World at War starts new Double XP weekend; PC patch coming

If you are a fan of Treyarch's WWII shooter Call of Duty: World at War then this weekend will be a big one for those gamers. The official Call of Duty: World at War web site has announced they are now hosting a new Double XP weekend. Starting now you can play the game online and get double the normal experience points you would normally get. This is available for every owner of the game, not just those who have the special Collector's Edition. (the Nazi Zombie co-op mode is also unlocked for all console versions but it's unknown if PC owners get that as well).

In related news, Treyarch has announced on their forums that a 1.2 patch for the PC version of the game is in the works and will be released at the end of January or the beginning of February. There's also a fairly extensive message board post which attempts to explain how Treyech goes about creating PC patches for the game.

Review: Call of Duty World at War

It's hard to believe it but Activision has decided to make their massive selling Call of Duty shooter series an annual affair, much like an EA sports game. That means every year for as long as we can forcast, there will always be a Call of Duty shooter title. Last year the creator of the series, Infinity Ward, blew everyone away with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. With an all new present day setting, a great looking in-house graphics engine, excellent single player gameplay and innovative multiplayer features, it was a home run in both quality and in sales.

So with Infinity Ward presumably working on yet another game in the franchise for release in the fall of 2009, it fell to another Activision developer, Treyarch, to come up with 2008's entry in the series. The final result, Call of Duty World at War, is still entertaining but it's also clear that Treyarch didn't want to break away too much from what made Call of Duty 4 so successful.

Call of Duty: World at War will have NAZI ZOMBIES!

Perhaps trying to steal a little of Left 4 Dead's thunder, this week's episode of Spike TV's Gametrailers TV show revealed a previously secret gameplay mode in Call of Duty: World at War. In two words: NAZI ZOMBIES!. Once the single player campaign is completed in Activision's upcoming WWII shooter, the game unlocks a special four-player co-op mode where the players have to fight off an endless stream of (wait for it) NAZI ZOMBIES!

This mode actually has more to it than just trying to stay alive. There's an economy system as well. Apparently you can earn money to unlock more weapons and rebuild barricades to slow down the zombie horde. The team at Treyarch have gotten up to 23 waves of zombies in the mode before they got overwhelmed so if your team gets over that mark, consider yourselves primo zombie hunters.
