Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - December 10-12

Yep, we've been a little slack on the Bits and Bytes side this week. Our sincere apologies for those of you who read this part of the blog. Things should be back on track next week:

Steam has Halloween-themed PC game sale this weekend

We have already reported on GamersGate and Impulse holding Halloween-themed PC game sales this weekend. Today it's Steam's turn to cut prices on a bunch of horror or scary-themed game titles. From now until November 1 you can get a large selection of titles at 50 to 75 percent off.

The list of games involved is too long to be listed here but there's a sample. Aliens Vs Predator (2010) is available for for $9.99. the zombie game Nation Red is just $3.39, Zombie Driver is a mere $4.99 and Team Fortress 2 (not realy a horror game but what the heck) has a price cut of $9.99.

Steam updates a number of games with bug fixes

It's been a little while since we have posted up news of automatic patches of games via Steam so consider this a catch-up as a number of PC game titles that offered up patches via Valve's download service. One of the biggest is for Supreme Commander 2. Gas Powered Games' latest RTS game updated earlier this week with a big change to its economy. Before the patch you patch for units and structures when they were ordered. This new update makes you spend for units when they actually start construction. There are also a number of other changes and bug fixes in the patch.

Other PC games that have gotten bug updates via Steam include R.U.S.E., Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike Source, a truly massive patch for Victoria 2, Garry's Mod, X3 Terran Conflict, Left 4 Dead 2, Nation Red, DogFighter, and Sol Survivor.

Nation Red gets co-op support in Steam update; 50 percent off sale

Remember when co-op support for a game was something that was a rarity in games? Not anymore. If you don't have some kind of co-op mode or separate campaign with co-op support in a shooter, you might as well not release it. In the case of the 2009 released zombie-themed shooter Nation Red, developer DiezelPower has finally put an online co-op feature in the title in the latest patch via Steam.

In addition to co-op mode the new free update adds matchmaking and friends features (needed for online co-op). There's also a new primary and secondary weapons system, new achievements, a new weapon (a minigun) new perks and most important more blood and gore effects. Best of all, the game is getting a 50 percent off sale on Steam from now until Thursday. You can get the title now for a mere $4.99.

New Nation Red update adds lots of new content

For a $9.99 game, the developers at DiezelPower have been great at adding new free content on a regular basis for their zombie-themed arcade shooter Nation Red. This week the latest such free update was released via Steam and brings a bunch of updates and additions to the title.

Among the new bits of content is two new gameplay modes (Bridge and Warehouse), a new zombie boss that can deactivate power ups and various new perks and achievements. There's also added support for user made maps, a new tutorial, more accurate weapon damage, new NPC soldiers that help you defeat the zombies and, well, lots more.

New Nation Red patch released

The development team at DiezelPower seems to update their zombie action game Nation Red about as much as Valve updates Team Fortress 2. This week yet another new update was delivered to its players via Steam and as usual it adds quite a bit to the title.

The big new addition in this latest patch is the Steam Cloud feature which will allow Nation Red owners to store their save games, profiles and custom settings via a remote server and use them on any PC that has Steam installed. Some new achievements have also been added to the game. There's also been a change in how to unlock weapons. All weapons are now put into classes. Each class will unlock after a certain amount of time has passed with some random unlocking.

Nation Red update adds new free content

The development team at DiezelPower are certainly determined to give players their money's worth if they have bought their top-down zombie shooter Nation Red. They have added lots of new content to the game via Steam since its release last fall. This week yet another new update has added lots of new stuff to the game.

There's a new weapon (an automatic shotgun with 20 rounds of ammo), a new kind of hostile zombie, new missions that give you up to five stars based on difficulty, new achievement and, well, lots more that we don't have the room to list here. You can check out the full patch list at Steam's web site.

Nation Red gets major Steam update

Zombie shooters seem to be all the rage and one of the more recent ones just got a massive free content update. Steam owners of Nation Red, the top down shooter from developer DiezelPower, can now download the free update automatically.

The new update adds two new weapons, a number of new achievement, several new perks and the new Rage power up to the game. It also adds two new gameplay modes. One is called Barricade where you can use reloadable sentry guns to fight off waves of zombies. The other is called Auto Perk. This allows you to make a list of your favorite perks. When you play in Auto Perk mode the game automatically upgrades your character with your perks without having to have you pause the game to do so.

Nation Red Steam update adds new content and features

It's appropriate that the recently released top down zombie shooter Nation Red gets a major new content update for its Steam edition this week. If you need some zombie action this $14.99 game from developer DiezelPower might be what you are wanting, at least until the next zombie game is released.

The new Steam update adds some Steamworks features to the game including eight Steam leaderboards and 23 Steam achievements to unlock. In addition, 13 new player perks have been added as well as a new weapon, the dual glock. Finally the game has added some new ragdoll death animations for the zombies when they get hit with explosives. Now that's some fun, huh?
