Napoleon: Total War gets February 23 release date

While Ubisoft may have pushed back their RTS game R.U.S.E out of the first quater 2010 time frame, Sega is sticking with its schedule for releasing their RTS entry Napoleon: Total War. Today the game's developer The Creative Assembly announced in the game's message boards that the title is now scheduled for a February 23 release.

The game is a kind of stand alone follow up to 2009's Empire: Total War which takes place during the late 18th century. While some fans of the first game may have wondered why the Napoleonic Wars time period wasn't included in Empire: Total War, The Creative Assembly's Mike Simpson attempts to explain it in a new blog entry. He states, "....the level of detail required to successfully depict the Napoleonic wars is an order of magnitude greater than we were working to with Empire: Total War." He adds, " . . . it's a huge new experience and step up in quality. It should be fresh and different and interesting enough to hold their attention for many, many hours."

Steam offers Napoleon: Total War extras

Earlier this week Sega announced plans to offer up an Imperial Edition of an upcoming historical RTS game Napoleon: Total War. However, that's not the only special offer that's associated with the latest game from developer The Creative Assembly. The Steam download service has a couple of extras if you should buy.

If you purchase the standard game via Steam, you will be able to use the exclusive Royal Scots Greys elite unit in both single and multiplayer modes. If you decide to spend some more money for the Imperial Edition you not only get the extra unit you also get something immediately; a free copy Medieval II: Total War to play while waiting for the game's release.

Napoleon Total War Imperial Edition revealed

It looks like fans of the Total War RTS franchise will be getting a special edition of the latest game in the series. Developer The Creative Assembly and publisher Sega have announced plans for the "Imperial Edition" version of the previously announced Napoleon Total War.

The boxed version of the Imperial Edition will contain the game itself as well as a wall chart that will show the real history behind France's most famous general Napoleon Bonaparte. Both the boxed version of the Imperial Edition and the downloadable one (via Steam) will also have a special unlock code that will add 10 exclusive units under the Heroes of the Napoleonic Wars bundle.

But that's not all. The boxed copy of the Imperial Edition as well as the boxed standard retail edition will get access to another Steam code that will download another batch of five exclusive units under the Elite Regiment bundle. So if you want access to all of the exclusive units you have to get the boxed Imperial Edition of the game. Pricing and availability for the special edition has yet to be announced in the US.
