Ultima 4 downloads and fan projects pulled by EA; Mythic project to blame?

Back in the 1990s, the fantasy RPG Ultima 4 from developer Origin Systems was released for free from a few selected and official sources. A lot of folks believed this made the game freeware. However in fact it doesn't as the game's current owner Electronic Arts still owns the rights to the entire Ultima game franchise.

Now word comes from the fan site Ultima Aiera that EA has been sending cease and desist letters to web sites hosting the Ultima 4 download along with other sites that have hosted Flash-based remakes. Why has EA, after all this time, decided to move on these sites? Ultma Aiera speculates that it may have something to do with a secret project at EA's Mythic Entertainment developer. It bases that speculation on Twitter messages from Mythic's creative director Paul Barnett that hint that it may be Ultima related.

Activision to publish Bungie's future games; will they come to the PC?

In the midst of their issues with current and ex-Infinity Ward team members, publisher Activision Blizzard made a major move today with their announcement that they will be the publisher for Halo creators Bungie for the next 10 years. The agreement will have the publisher release Bungie's next original game franchise which will be in the action genre but Bungie will retain full ownership of those games.

The big question: will those games be released for the PC? Bungie has been an Xbox/Xbox 360 exclusive developer for all of its Halo games under Microsoft, including this fall's Halo: Reach. Activision stated their agreement with Bungie for their new game franchise covers multiple platforms so there's a big chance that we could see Bungie's next game come to your hard drive.

Warhammer Online producer provides update on changes

One of the two major news items from Wednesday (the other being the whole id Software-ZeniMax Media dealie) was the revelation that Mythic Entertainment and BioWare would now be part of a new RPG/MMO division at Electronic Arts. The heads of BioWare are the new heads of the game division while Mythic co-founder Mark Jacobs decided to either leave or got kicked out the door (depending on what theory you believe).

Today the official community site for Mythic's MMO Warhammer Onine has a post from the game's producer Jeff Hickman. While most of the post deals with upcoming updates to the game he did address the changes that were announced Wednesday.

Hickman states, "We are committed to Warhammer, Ultima Online, and Dark Age of Camelot, and have solid plans for each game. I look forward to discussing our plans for of all of these games with you in the near future." At the end of his post he added, "The Winds of Change are upon us, but the ship and crew remain the same. As I've said before and I'll say it again, from myself and everyone at Mythic: Thank you for your continued passion and support. We look forward to the many months and years ahead...WAAAGH!"

Warhammer Online Halloween in-game event begins Thursday

MMO developers seem to love Halloween as many of them hold special in-game events to celebrate everything scary and frightening. Warhammer Online may be the new kid on the MMO block but EA's Mythic team isn't using that as an excuse to get out of celebrating All Hallow's Eve. Beginning tomorrow they will hold their first major in-game event.

The event, titled The Witching Night, looks like its an excuse for everyone to wear masks (as illustrated by the above screenshot). Four new public quests will be added to the game during the event and apparently ghosts and witches will be roaming the lands as well. Special in-game items like masks and cloaks will also be offered as part of the event.
