moonbase-alpha posts

Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - August 10

We are just a couple of days away from some interesting game announcements. Are you ready?

Free Moonbase Alpha game released

As promised last week, the free space simulation game Moonbase Alpha has been released via Steam. And we once again state that this game has nothing to do (unfortunately) with the 1970's TV series Space 1999 which is set on (wait for it) Moonbase Alpha.

The game was co-developed by Virtual Heroes and the America's Army Game Project on behalf of NASA. The game pits you as a space-suited astronaut on the moon in the near future. The goal of the game is to repair the life support systems of Moonbase Alpha after they are damaged by a meteorite impact. The game is also supposed to be a proof-of-concept for a proposed NASA MMO game which Big Download exclusively revealed the details of several months ago.

This Week In PC Games: July 5-11

While there are no new PC games that are scheduled to be released to retail stores this week there are a number of downloadable games and expansion packs that might be of interest to PC gamers that are scheduled to come out over the next seven days. We have listed this week's scheduled expansion pack releases after the jump

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge Special Edition
- LucasArts does it again with its second revamp of one of their classic adventure games. Not only do you get modern graphics, sound and voice overs but you get a commentary mode with the creators of the original game to boot.

NASA MMO game to get mini-demo in January

Last February Big Download broke the news that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration was funding the development of an educational MMO project called Astronaut: Moon, Mars and Beyond. While that game isn't due to be completed for some time NASA is apparently whipping up a mini-demo based on the game that will be released soon.

Titled Moonbase Alpha (we wonder if there are some fans of the Space: 1999 TV series at NASA) the demo will be released via Steam "just before or after January 2010." There is little info on what the demo will be all about but from this YouTube video we can guess that Moonbase Alpha will have the player controlling a spacesuit-wearing astronaut on the surface of Earth's moon doing various tasks.
