This is the official US/North America demo for the online city planning game, Cities XL. It allows users to play online for 7 days, creating a single city with the maximum population of 22,000 citizens. Afterwards, players can decide to start all over again from one of the demo's three different maps. Chat and trade are enabled, and players have one Capitol City to visit. The demo represents roughly 10% of the full game.

Playing Cities XL is about more than just designing a great looking city, there's also a social engineering aspect found in the game. City planners can construct police stations and other emergency response structures to combat the crime rate, or they could decide that educating kids is the best way to go. The players' choices in city planning have impacts, since heavy industry could potentially cause a lot of pollution. Players will get a chance to see exactly how far their decisions go when the game releases in October.

This is the playable EU region demo for Cities XL, the online city building game from Monte Cristo. The demo contains three maps that you can play for a week. City population is capped at 22,000. You must also register for a free account in order to play the demo.

[Update]: Although this demo may work in North America, US/Canadian players are encouraged to wait until the official regional version releases before downloading, registering and playing.

In Cities XL, players are free to build the city of their dreams. Furthermore, natural landscapes and resources can be used in addition to building wonders to improve the look and general attractiveness of the city. One of the more impressive features, as shown in the video, includes the option to reproduce an existing city with monuments, then add in the player's personal touch for improvements. Cities XL is expected to release in the fall.

Monte Cristo Games is apparently not willing to wait any longer for a US retail distribution deal for their city simulation Cities XL. On the games official web site the dev team has announced that the game will be self-published by them . . but will not be released (yet) in retail stores.

Rather the game will be made available via download from several established services like Direct2Drive, Steam, Impulse, GameTap and others. Cities XL will be released on October 9 from these outlets. If you are still not hip to the idea of downloading games, you can send in your money for a mail order release of a boxed version. Monte Cristo will even pay for your shipping charges.

This trailer for Cities XL reveals many of the gameplay features players will be able to use to build the city of their dreams in this upcoming urban planning MMO. The game is expected to launch in October.
