Modern Warfare 2 DLC map packs on sale on Steam this week

We are not the first folks to complain about the high price of the two downloadable map packs for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Let's face it; $15 for a new new maps each is pretty steep. However, publisher Activision has decided to give PC gamers a price break for the next week on the two map packs.

From now until October 11, owners of the PC port of the mega-popular first person shooter will be able to purchase and download the two map packs via Steam for just $7.49 each, a 50 percent price drive. The Stimulus Pack and the Resurgance Pack each contain five maps which are a mix of all new levels and revamped ones from the first Modern Warfare game.

Modern Warfare 2 PC Resurgence Map Pack available for Steam pre-orders

Fans may hate it that they have to pay money for a five level multiplayer map pack for Modern Warfare 2 but the first such Stimulus Package map pack for Infinity Ward's mega selling shooter was a huge seller on Steam for the PC version of the game. Now Steam has launched pre-orders for the second and final Modern Warfare 2 map pack.

The pack will be released on July 5 and if you pre-order you can knock off 10 percent of the pack's normal $15 price tag. As we have noted before the Resurgence Map Pack will contain three all new levels plus two others that have been adapted from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Modern Warfare 2 Resurgence Pack announced

We knew that a second map pack for Modern Warfare 2 was in the works. Today publisher Activision revealed that the second map pack for the hit first person shooter will be called the Resurgence Pack. Like the previous Stimulus Pack it will contain five additional multiplayer levels. No other details on the map pack were released.

The pack will be released for Xbox 360 owners first on June 3. If the Resurgence Pack release schedule is like the Stimulus Pack PC gamers can expect to get access to this second map pack sometime in July. Despite a $15 price tag, the first DLC for Modern Warfare 2 has been a big sales hit on Steam.

Rockstar Games Collection tops Steam's best seller list this week

A huge sale of all of Rockstar Games via Steam last week managed to get the bundle on top of the best seller list (according to revenue) for the PC game download service. A second bundle for Codemasters' driving games was second on the list. In fact it was so popular that Steam ran out of game codes for one of the bundle's titles Fuel. More keys are on the way, however and people who bought the bundle will get the game downloaded when they are available.

The full list is below:

1. Rockstar Collection - Rockstar Games
2. Codemasters Racing Pack - Codemasters
3. Left 4 Dead 2 - Valve
4. Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package - Infinity Ward/Activision
5. Battlefield Bad Company 2 - Digital Illusions/EA
6. Splinter Cell Conviction Deluxe Edition - Ubisoft
7. Splinter Cell Conviction - Ubisoft
8. Guild Wars Trilogy - ArenaNet/NCsoft
9. Grand Theft Auto IV - Rockstar Games
10. Modern Warfare 2 - Infinity Ward/Activision

This Week In PC Games: May 3-9

There are no new full PC games that are currently scheduled for release this week but there are two downloadable expansions of note; one is free and one costs $15:

Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package
: Would you pay $15 for a five map multiplayer upgrade? Apparently a lot of you are judging from pre-order sales on Steam for this upcoming map pack for Infinity Ward's best selling first person shooter. Three of the maps are all new while two of the maps are converted from the previous game in the series Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package map pack coming to PC May 4

PC owners now have a date to anticipate downloading the "Stimulus Package" map pack for the hit first person shooter Modern Warfare 2. Robert Bowling, the community manager for developer Infinity Ward, has announced that the PC version of the map pack will be released worldwide on May 4.

There's no word yet if publisher Activision plans to charge for the PC version of the map pack. The official PC map packs for the previous two Call of Duty franchise games were provided for free and were included in a PC patch. The map pack itself will include five multiplayer levels; two all new and three remakes from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. And just a quick reminder; the multiplayer portion of Modern Warfare 2 should be available to play online for free via Steam starting right now though the weekend.

More info on Modern Warfare 2 DLC map pack emerges

While we wait to see of the PC versions of the first Modern Warfare 2 DLC map pack will be free or if PC players will actually have to pay for the thing, at least some more info about what the map pack will contain has been leaked out. Our sister site Joystiq A page on the Xbox 360 web site is the source of the reveal (the Xbox 360 will get first crack at the map pack on March 30).

According to the page, the "Stimulus Package" DLC will have five multiplayer maps. Three will be all new; Bailout is set in a multi-level apartment complex, Storm is set in a more open industrial park and Salvage is located in a junkyard with snow. The other two maps, Crash and Overgrown, are remakes from Infinity Ward's previous first person shooter Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. All in all it sounds like a pretty meaty map pack. Now if we can just get the developer to agree to release some mod tools and perhaps a dedicated server we would be all set.

Modern Warfare 2 DLC teaser web site launched; PC release date still unknown

The PC port of Modern Warfare 2 has been highly successful for developer Infinity Ward and folks have awaiting when the promised downloadable map packs would be released. Tonight, it was revealed, as previously announced, that the Xbox 360 version of the hit first person shooter would get first crack at the first downloadable map pack. A teaser site for the DLC (with the image to the right; don't ask) states the Xbox 360 release date for the pack will be March 30.

And what about the PC version? Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling "tweeted" that the DLC for our platform will be released sometime later but would not give a specific date. Also not known is if PC owners of the game will have to pay for their map packs. Previous Call of Duty games have allowed PC players to gain access to extra official map packs for free via patches.
